I am looking for a standardized language test e.g. CEFR that will measure a Year 12 student's skill levels in speaking, listening, reading and writing to get exam access arrangements. Can anyone give me any advice for the most straightforward way to do this?

Hi Hilary

If you want to use the CEFR tests, I think you can access past papers online. Unfortunately I don't have the exact link, but the Council of Europe might be a good place to start.

These tests are not aimed at EAL pupils, more at EFL students, but there are no "specifically EAL" tests.

Exam access arrangements for EAL pupils usually depend on the length of time they have been in the country, rather than their actual level of English, so I'm wondering if it is something that just your school is requiring for "proof", or if there are particular circumstances surrounding this one year 12 pupil.

Best wishes,

Ann

Hi,
You could try Cambridge University Press website - look for KEY, PET etc. tests.

I concur with Ann.

It’s hard to help without knowing what this assessment is for in more detail and the context of the student.

Is the purpose diagnostic or summative? To identify what they do or don’t know?!

If you Google ‘English Proficiency Test’ then a variety of links come up including British Council, IELTS (commonly used for university applications) and SELT (for citizenship applications). If a test is standardised/accredited, then there is likely to be a fee.

For which exams is the school trying to improve the student’s access?

For GCSEs and A Level I would have thought the diagnostic materials/guidance provided by the BELL Foundation would be more appropriate for a Y12 student, assuming (as Ann says) that for some reason time in the country isn’t sufficient and evidence of need is required.

Best wishes

Di Leedham.

Thank you all for responding to my request. The assessment is for IB at an international school.

Password English Language Testing is very good - but at a cost - alternatively use the Cambridge online tests KET, B1 for Schools and B2 for schools.
These will give you listening, reading and writing. You will have to use the materials to carry out the speaking test by yourself.
Best wishes,
Dawn
