Hello colleagues

here on the Isle of Man our highest percentage of EAL pupils are from the Philippines.  For reasons any of you might shed light on, there does not seem to be any means of accrediting Tagalog, that I can find.  I know there are many languages and dialects of the Philippines (thousands of islands 2,000 inhabited) but doesn't Tagalog warrant GCSE, similar or equivalent?  We would like to value and credit all our students' first languages and have had considerable success with some.  For the want of a means of doing so, we've not been able to offer the same accreditation across the board and it seems a bit unfair where languages like Tagalog and Thai are concerned because some might lose what they started off with.

Thank you

Susan

Dear Susan

There is a national campaign going on at the moment - Speak to the Future - the campaign for languages.  One of the areas they are working on, is to find a way to develop some form of accreditation in the wake of the demise of Asset Languages.  You might want to raise your issue with them so that they can include Tagalog in the work they do.  http://www.speaktothefuture.org/contact/

The Chartered Institute of Linguists offers a Level 3 Certificate in Bilingual Skills (A level equivalent) in a wide range of languages, including Thai, but not Tagalog or Filipino.

Best wishes
Amy
