English as a second language GCSE?

Hi all,

Just checking if the English as a second language GCSE is still the best fit for students in FE who are not able to sit the English Language and English Literature exams (Bell Bands A-C). This is for a non-UK context so gov't requirements are not an issue, just wondering if there is something new/better that I don't know about.

I would certainly say that ESL GCSE is more of a true English Language exam than the current "normal" English Language GCSE, so in my view it will be of more benefit to the students anyway. I had one EAL pupil in the 6th form who actually looked forward to the one double period a week we could fit into his timetable for it, because he was so fed up with struggling with alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors and all the other literary devices that he had to deal with for English Language in his normal re-take lessons! He said the ESL GCSE was "real" English.

He in fact got a Higher grade in both exams in the end!

The only other alternatives would probably be ESOL exams for the appropriate levels.
