Dear group,

The topic of how we assess English proficiency of children with EAL is consistently coming up in our discussions with teachers and professionals in LAs when speaking about lifting the language barriers and helping students develop their skills at school.

Together with a small but enthusiastic team of students and professionals in education we are looking into what teachers want from EAL assessment, to begin with. This will lead to a second stage where an interactive EAL profile database will be created to share with all professionals that take part.

EAL-bilingual members are really insightful in the day-to-day practice of supporting EAL in the classroom, so I'd be really grateful for your thoughts if your role involves assessing your students' English language proficiency or if you co-ordinate teachers who do.

Please take a 10 min survey to give us your views with a chance to win £50 at the end of data collection. There are two versions, depending on which assessment framework you use in your practice. See CALL below for links.

If you know other EAL professionals, please share the CALL below, so that we can capture as many views as possible.

As a way to give back to the community, we are going to share our results with anyone interested in the topic.

Thanks ever so much.

What do teachers want from English language assessment for EAL students?

A joint team of researchers and teacher educators from the University of Reading (UoR) and the Bell Foundation are looking into this question.

If you assess the English proficiency of children with English as their Additional Language, we want to hear your views. Take our e-survey lasting 10-15 minutes and tell us what you think.

The survey is anonymous and approved by the Ethics Committee of the UoR. There will be a £50 prize draw at the end of data collection - the winner will be randomly selected among all participants that complete the survey in full.
