Only today did I learn of my long-time friend’s passing. It is with great heartbreaking sadness that I report the departing of James Dewey Garner, Jr. He passed away in Bremen, Georgia, on December 2nd, 2016. He was 69 years old and is survived by his wife, Peggy.
My childhood memories are fondly and pleasantly populated with Jim’s presence. He contributed in many positive ways to the quality of life we EMers enjoyed.
We knew Jim by “Jimmy” during our school years. He was always affable and a best friend to many. During our years at the Desert Center Elementary School, he was an excellent and avid ping pong player. At Eagle Mountain High School, Class of 1965, he was a class officer and member of the student council. Jim was our class valedictorian.
Jim graduated California Baptist College, Riverside, California. After his family returned to Georgia, he taught at Temple Middle School, Temple, Georgia. Later he was employed in the security industry.
Jim’s father, James Dewey Garner, Sr, worked for Kaiser Steel Corp. at the mine and passed away in 1988. His mother, was an Eagle Mountain Elementary School 2nd grade teacher. She passed away in 2002.
A portion of each EMer goes with Jim. His passing creates an unfillable void. Along with many others, I too shall sorely miss “Jimmy” and continue to cherish his wonderful memory.
