Gary R Hopkins suddenly passed away in Arizona, 08 March, 2015.

Today I learned that my very long-time friend, classmate and fellow Vietnam veteran died. It was a sudden, unwanted and shocking surprise. Seems like only yesterday that I posted here that his father had passed away. An now I write of Gary...

About 12 years ago, Gary paid me a visit out of the blue. We went to Eagle Mountain: a nostalgia attack perhaps. We visited EMHS, once again walking on the Senior Quad and toured the campus. It had, of course, greatly changed since we graduated in 1965.

In 1983, the mine closed and the community died. All that remained (circa 2003) of the Hopkins house was the concrete foundation. Gary drove up on to what was once the living room floor. Using a cellular phone, he then called his mother. When she answered, Gary said: "Mom, guess where I'm at?"

That was the last time I saw and spoke with my friend. We sporadically exchanged emails over the years. Like others, we EMers are deprived of Gary's presence on the planet. We have lost a piece of ourselves and left with an unfulfillable void.

After graduating EMHS, Gary enlisted in the Army. He did a tour of duty in Vietnam, as a helicopter door gunner. A very dangerous assignment, from which Gary survived. After his honorable discharge, he returned to civilian life and became a husband, parent and grandparent.
