Mixed-readiness mathematics classes, like all diverse learning communities, are filled with enormous challenges and opportunities. Sound research tells us struggling and advanced math learners are better off grouped heterogeneously. Practical experiences remind us that idealistic visions of personalized math learning are difficult enough to conceptualize much less realize.
While embracing readiness diversity is a first step towards maximizing learning, the choices of onward steps aren’t always clear as competing visions of personalized learning abound. With this in mind, a major goal of Challenge by Choice: Teaching Math for Inclusion is to conceptualize an inspiring vision of differentiated math instruction while experiencing practical approaches for bringing this vision to fruition.
