Save the date for online events ahead of Minamata Convention COP-6
|

In the lead-up to the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-6),
a dedicated week of
online events will provide an informal platform for Parties and observers to share information and highlight advances in technology, research and policy for the attention
of Parties and the global community that the Convention serves.
The online events will take place
from 13 to 17 October, with each session lasting 60 minutes. They will be conducted using the WebEx platform and will be broadcasted on the
Convention’s YouTube channel.

During COP-6,
special
events will include: a panel discussion and movie screening on protecting the Amazon from mercury pollution with special guests Fernando Trujillo and Aileen Mioko
Smith, a high-level dialogue on driving effective and inclusive implementation, a focus on the
planetGOLD Programme, and a panel discussion and movie screening on
detoxifying cosmetics and beauty ideals. In the margins of the COP, the
Humanæ
photo exhibition on diversity and mercury-free cosmetics will be displayed on Geneva’s lakeshore.

Register for this
hybrid briefing on 2 October (13h00-14h30 CEST), organized under the
Geneva Environment Network. The session, which will also be live streamed, will be opened by the COP President Osvaldo Patricio Álvarez
Pérez. The Minamata Convention Secretariat will provide updates on
preparations for
COP-6 on 3-7 November, including an overview of logistical aspects, the tentative programme of events, and how the upcoming meeting can
best support Parties and the wider community working to reduce mercury pollution. Learn

Follow the COP-6 regional preparatory meetings
|
|
|
Ahead of COP-6, a series of
regional preparatory meetings are taking place to strengthen coordination and bring regional perspectives into the negotiations. The Group of Latin American and Caribbean
Countries (GRULAC) met in Chile (3-4 September),
Eastern European States in Switzerland (16-17 September), and
Asia-Pacific in Thailand (23-24 September). The
African meeting will follow in Kenya (7-9 October). Learn

Explore COP-6 working and information documents
|
|
|
The
COP-6 documents are now available on the Minamata Convention website to support Parties and observers in their preparations. All
working documents are accessible in the six official UN languages, while
information documents are published only in English. Additional materials will be uploaded in the coming days as they become available. These resources provide the
essential basis for discussions and decision-making at COP-6. Learn

Minamata Convention at the 15th InforMEA Steering Committee
|
|
|
The meeting gathered representatives of
22 multilateral environmental agreements to advance cooperation on knowledge management, interoperability and digitalization, with a focus on how
InforMEA can continue to evolve as a community of practice. The Minamata Convention Secretariat shared recent progress in implementing its
digital strategy, including the new thematic web “Focus Areas,” upgraded reporting tool, and dynamic dashboards for national reporting and project data. Learn

|

|
During the GRULAC regional preparatory meeting, the two Secretariats launched the 2025 Fact Sheet on Minamata Convention and
Escazú Agreement linkages.
Available in English and Spanish, the fact
sheet highlights common areas of work to protect people and the environment from mercury pollution in
Latin America and the Caribbean, including access to environmental information, pollutant release and transfer registers, ASGM, biodiversity, and the protection of groups in vulnerable situations.
