EA Austin is hosting two upcoming discussions of Will MacAskill's book What We Owe the Future.

Pick up a free physical copy of the book at our weekly Buzz Mill event this Thursday, October 27th (Google Group eventFacebook event), or email in...@eaaustin.org  .

1. Virtual Partial-Book Discussion

When? Wednesday, 11/2, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Where? Virtual: Google Meet Link

What? An optional discussion of WWOTF for those who want to check in partway through or can't make the in-person discussion. We will discuss parts 1, 2, and 3 (the first 165 pages).

2. In-Person Full-Book Discussion

When? Thursday, 11/10, 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM

Where? The Buzz Mill, 1505 Town Creek Dr, Austin, TX

What? We will spend the first 90 minutes of our regular weekly social discussing the What We Owe the Future in its entirety. Then, as usual, the last hour of two of the meetup will be casual socializing related to effective altruism.

Buzz Mill Logistics

  • Parking at The Buzz Mill sometimes fills up, in which case we suggest parking in the large Walgreens parking lot across the street.
  • Food? There are two food trucks at The Buzz Mill (one is vegan).

Join the EA Austin Slack’s #group-wwotf-reading channel for further discussion of the book outside these two events. If you're not on the Slack yet, complete our Member Survey for an invitation.

What is EA Austin? EA Austin is the local chapter of the global Effective Altruism community. Effective altruism is a project that aims to find the best ways to help others and put them into practice. It's both a research field, which aims to identify the world’s most pressing problems and the best solutions to them, and a practical community that aims to use those findings to do good.

If you are new to EA and wish to attend this event, please read this overview of effective altruism (15 min read): http://bit.ly/introea

Feel free to reach out at in...@eaaustin.org if you have questions!

Reminder that EA Austin is meeting tonight at 7 PM at The Buzz Mill!

Per feedback, we'll break into smaller groups at the tables in the back rather than be seated at the long picnic tables. Also note that while the main discussion in the first half is about What We Owe the Future, everyone is welcome even if you have not read the book! This is still our regular social discussion for the week and those who have not read the book are free to listen in or break off and start the usual socializing about all things EA early before the rest of the group joins in around 9 PM.

See you all soon!
