2. You are invited to a free, virtual event, "Emphasizing Concepts over Computations: A Panel Discussion," that will take place on Tuesday, September 23rd, 3:30-4:30 p.m. ET. The recommendations in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report were recently updated. Five statistics educators, including several members of the College GAISE Revision Steering Committee, will discuss the third recommendation, which states, “Focus on conceptual understanding rather than algebraic manipulation and formulas.” Ulrike Genschel (Iowa State University), Kate Kozak (Coconino Community College), Patti Frazer Lock (St. Lawrence University), Jamie Perrett (Brigham Young University), and Kelly Spoon (San Diego Mesa College) will share advice and examples that will help statistics instructors emphasize concepts over computations. Moderated by Donna LaLonde (American Statistical Association) and Lisa Kay (Chair of ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education), this session will provide attendees with tools that support effective teaching in the statistics classroom.
