A free faculty development workshop titled “Teaching Statistical Thinking with GAISE: Exploring the Statistical Investigation Process through Simulation-Based Inference” will be held on Friday, July 31 (from 3-7pm) and Saturday, August 1 (from 9am-4pm) on the campus of Curry College, near Boston, Massachusetts. Teachers with all levels of experience and familiarity with teaching introductory statistics are encouraged to attend. Note that these dates immediately precede the Joint Statistical Meetings to be held in Boston.
Workshop goals are to help faculty participants to teach introductory statistics effectively in accordance with the American Statistical Association’s GAISE recommendations (www.amstat.org/gaise). More specific goals are to:
Immerse participants in hands-on activities for introducing students to statistical concepts, particularly with regard to:
Statistical investigation process
Building on students’ intuition and emerging conceptions
Simulation-based inference
Provide considerable experience with freely available technology tools for exploring statistical concepts and analyzing real data.
Introduce participants to instructional strategies aligned with Universal Design for Learning to support students in introductory statistics courses.
Form a community of statistics teachers to offer on-going mutual support, sharing of resources and ideas.
Workshop presenters will be Jennifer McNally and Laura Callis (from Curry College) and Karen McGaughey (from Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo) .
Workshop participants will be provided with free lodging on the Curry campus for Friday and Saturday nights. Also provided will be dinner on Friday and Saturday evening, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
Limited funds are available for travel support for workshop participants who need such support. The workshop registration form includes a question about applying for travel support. Requests for travel support that are submitted before May 1 will receive full consideration.

Individuals participating in the Preparing to Teach (PTT) workshop at JSM are especially encouraged to register for this free workshop and apply for travel support. The goal of the PTT workshop is to prepare graduate students for a role as faculty responsible for teaching statistics and data science to undergraduate students across a variety of disciplines. More information about PTT, including the application form, can be found here: https://preparingtoteach.org/
This workshop is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation titled “Expanding and Assessing the Art and Practice of Statistical Thinking” (award number 2235355), for which Nathan Tintle serves as Principal Investigator.
