A faculty development workshop titled “Teaching Statistical Thinking with GAISE: Statistical Investigation Process, Multivariable Thinking, Simulation-Based Inference” will be held on Friday, May 15 (from 9am-4pm) and Saturday, May 16 (from 9am-12pm) at the Marietta, Georgia campus of Kennesaw State University (see below for address).  Teachers with all levels of experience and familiarity with teaching introductory statistics are encouraged to attend.

Workshop goals are to help faculty participants to teach introductory statistics effectively in accordance with the American Statistical Association’s GAISE recommendations (www.amstat.org/gaise).  More specific goals are to:

  1. Immerse participants in hands-on activities for introducing students to statistical concepts, particularly with regard to:

    1. Statistical investigation process

    2. Multivariable thinking

    3. Simulation-based inference

  2. Provide considerable experience with freely available technology tools for exploring statistical concepts and analyzing real data.

  3. Discuss assessment items and techniques, along with common student misconceptions.

  4. Offer practical advice for teaching introductory statistics online as well as in-person.

  5. Introduce participants to instructional strategies aligned with Universal Design for Learning to support students in introductory statistics courses.

  6. Form a community of statistics teachers to offer on-going mutual support, sharing of resources and ideas.

Workshop presenters will be Soma Roy and Anelise Sabbag (from Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo) and Laura Callis (from Curry College near Boston).

This workshop is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation titled “Expanding and Assessing the Art and Practice of Statistical Thinking” (award number 2235355), for which Nathan Tintle serves as Principal Investigator.  More information about this project can be found here: https://sites.google.com/view/eaapost.
