to announce

Hi, all,

Our November meeting is Saturday morning Nov. 18.  Topic is "Strength, Weight, & Cost of Wood, Aluminum & Steel for Airplanes"

Remember to come early  for Pancakes at 10A, then we'll have our meeting at 11A at the Rollins' hangar at the Gordonsville Airport KGVE.

For those who can't attend in person, we will have our Zoom meeting open, as always.  The link is the same every month:

Christmas party: Unless I hear a more popular suggestion, I'll plan on scheduling our December meeting and Christmas lunch at La Naranja in Orange, same as last year.  Unfortunately Inwood either refused reservations or cancelled at the last minute several years in a row, so I took that to mean they didn't want us anymore.

Next, since our officers have 2-year terms, and this is the mid-term year (so Fred tells me - I forgot), we don't need to do nominations this month.  BUT... NOW's the time to consider serving your chapter as an officer.  It's an old saying that you get out of an organization what you put into it.  Serving as an officer or volunteering in another capacity is one way to really get a lot more from your chapter.  And your current slate has been serving for 8 years now I think, except for Treasurer Stephen who graciously took over after Stan, what, 6 years ago?

What do officers do?  I'll start off this month describing the President's role:

  1. Send out the announcements each month.  That's pretty simple, just remember to send the email to the announce list - a Google group - with the topic, provided by the program chair (currently VP Dennis Harbin).
  2. Run the meeting: announce the start (sometimes like herding cats), provide any needed announcements, and hand the meeting off to the program chair.
  3. Act as a backup for bank transactions.
  4. Occasionally coordinate other business, such as getting our 501c3 nonprofit status straightened out, and coordinating changing banks.
  5. HQ provides training via officer bootcamps at different times in different places.  I went to one in Manassas last year.

That's about it, nothing much.  If you're not much for speaking to a crowd, just remember we're (presently) a small group and somewhat well behaved.  So far I haven't had to dodge any rotten tomatoes.

This year, I've been promoting the pancake breakfasts.  That's not necessarily a responsibility of the President, just that I thought it would help bring in new people and traffic to the Gordonsville airport - and it's been very successful at that.  I'll let our Secretary Fred Rollins tell us at the meeting how many new visitors and new members we've attracted this year as a result, not to mention instead of bleeding financially each year we went in the black with our very first pancake breakfast!

Think about it!

See you Saturday!
