I'm running e2guardian on freeBSD using PFsense.  It's not fully supported yet, but i've manually installed and most everything works well.
The issue i'm having is that I'm starting to have these errors in my logs...

e2guardian[6896]: No free children from getfreechild(): numchildren = 160, busychildren = 159, waitingfor = 0
e2guardian[57821]: Error forking preforkchildren extra processes.

My Max Age Children is set for 500
My Min/Max Children is set to 10/160

I know my numbers are high, but I raised them trying to fight off this problem... It seems that the children processes are not being killed like they are supposed to.

How should I go about tracking this issue down?  Assuming the worst and there is some bug, is there a command that I can run to reset the processes once a day in cron or something?

Which version ? 3.0.4 or latest ?

Not very high, I'm using 8000 maxchildren with 5000/6000 running process
You can easily push the maxchildren limit to 500 or more, be careful by default you can't try beyond 1017 ( look at FD_SETSIZE here https://github.com/e2guardian/e2guardian/blob/master/INSTALL )

How should I go about tracking this issue down?  Assuming the worst and there is some bug, is there a command that I can run to reset the processes once a day in cron or something?

Please, can you post your e2guardian.conf ?

The latest available on freeBSD is 3.0.4_1

I'll have to get the conf file next time i'm onsite.

Provided you have some memory headroom increase maxchildren.

Also, stop and restart e2g once a day to clear any memory leakage.

Are you still using 3.1.2?

Child handling is improved in v3.2, so you could try develop branch to see if that is better, or wait for next stable (v3.2.1) due soon.

Thanks, I'll definitely setup a cron job to reset the service.  Unfortunately i'm stuck waiting for freeBSD to get newer versions ported over.

Ok, so I did a fresh install on Debian this time. Running e2guardian 3.2.0. I have been running it for 2 days and the logs are FULL with the same error of running out of children... The logs got in the GIGS within a day. What can I check? What are my options? I have it rebooting nightly and rotating logs every other hour... I'm sure something is wrong, but don't know where to start...

Also try setting dstatinterval = 60 and then tail or so the dstats.log and look to see if the child count is maxing out. This log also provides some other useful troubleshooting information.

Don't forget to set back dstatsinterval after you're finished or your log will bloat.
