Being a 'new testament guy' too, I'd go with an 'old testament' text also - as it's intended for non-Buddhists, it should be something *all* Buddhists can depend on, and that's the case with the Tipitaka, but not with Mahayana and Vajrayana texts. There is no 'bible' in Buddhism, but maybe the first chapters of Mahāvagga (I.01-06) might come close - maybe one could *add* the Heart Sutra as a kind of supplement? The Dhammapada would also do fine...
