I've been exploring Freemasonry.      They have sacred texts for Christians, Jews, Islam and Hindu, but not one for Buddhist.

For practical ecumenical purposes,  If you were to pick a sutra that would represent Buddhism, which would you choose?   The Dhammapada might be good.

So far I am thinking about the Prajnaparamita.    I once had the long form translation by Edward Conze and am thinking about buying a hardback copy of it.

I would go with the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. It was the very first discourse the Buddha gave, and it set out the key ideas (specifically the Noble truths and the eightfold path).

Of course, that’s just my CDN$0.02

Thanks Leland!   It is a bit thin for the ritual purposes I have in mind.   If I want a concise sutra, being a "new testament" rather than an "old testament" kinda of guy,   I might pick the short version of the Heart Sutra.   But I need something with the heft of a bible.
