"THRIVING With Children" - Beth Hall (Illinois)
There are some times I think about how we, as adults, sometimes make our lives feel so complicated and how if we just spent a day in the shoes of a child maybe we could go back to some simple joys.
I am reminded of this every day at work hearing and watching children express themselves: hearing two children walking in the hallway quietly discussing the excitement over a tooth coming out, one of my students exclaim "mind blown" when I introduced a new strategy to solve 3 and 4 digit subtraction, the group laughter when the class listens to a great story which I have the privilege to read to them, swinging on the swings at recess on the sunny and breezy playground, kicking that playground ball as far and as hard as they can, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance every morning, feeling grown-up and accomplished as they learn to write that cursive G - a tricky letter, reading together and engaging in a story, singing together and doing goofy dances such as the Toot-y Tah and the Turkey Tango, the students caring for each other and helping each other out in small yet compassionate ways- helping pick up a spilled crayon box or comforting someone who is sad, the anticipation of seeing their classmates as they enter the doors of the school in the morning, and the statements of wishing there weren't weekends or breaks as they'd rather be at school in our little classroom community every day.
We could learn from them perhaps.
