E-Prime error 18031

This question has come up periodically in the group, but I've never seen a clear answer.  We are (yet again) experiencing this issue; the experiment (which has run successfully many, many times) suddenly throws a runtime error 18031.

This indicates "Unable to communicate with the thread that fills the sound buffer contents"

It is not:

- the sound file.  Happens randomly; all have worked in the past.

- the memory.  Again, worked in the past

- general errors - fresh off of a restart

Any suggestions appreciated
