Hi all,

I'm a relative newbie. I am creating ana experiment that has three. One is a very simple listen >> respond task. The other two are based on the moving window task, one in Spanish and the other in English. The three tasks work as separate E-Prime tasks, no problem. When I combined them in one I get the "Left of "." must be an object, structure, or dialog" error ONLY on the second moving window task. They are set up in exactly the same way. they are just pulling from different lists of data (the data is now in the same folder, too). How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Mila,

Do your tasks use InLine code? Could code from the various tasks be defining & using variables with the same names in different ways?

Hi David,
Yes, the tasks have an InLine code. I compared the code for the two identical tasks. It's identical and it uses the variables in exactly the same ways, it just pulls from different lists.

Mila,

Does the error message direct you to a particular line in your program? Does the offending line occur in one of your InLines? If so, go ahead and post your InLines here.

The error report says it's on

Hi Mila,

It would help if you could copy-paste the full error report, and especially make sure where exactly this line 58 is (you can see it in e-prime). Basically, PCs are rarely wrong when it comes to scripts you think are exactly the same. Sometimes it’s something like

Text1.Text = ‘OK!’

Text2 .Text = ‘NOT OK!’

Looks the same, but the second has an added space, and therefore the left of .Text is not an object.

We might notice it here, but I’m a bit too busy to count exactly what line is line 58 in your script ;)

Best,

Michiel

Mila,

Thanks for adding this -- I had already pasted your code into a text editor so that I could get line numbers, and used the text editor to compare the text of the two code excerpts, they are indeed identical.

Note that your error comes at compile time rather than run time.  And if I count correctly [which your message now confirms], your error comes at the line

    Text1.Text = "+"

I suppose that Text1, Text2, etc. are all TextDisplay objects.  And it looks like the object Text1 has not been defined by the time your code wants to use it.  Does your program have a Text1 object somewhere?

I do have Text objects but none of them are defined as Text1, 2...  I have the English and Spanish portions as a stand alone experiments and they work just fine. It's just that when combining them I get the error.

This is the structure of the English portion of the experiment which so far is NOT giving me an error. It's followed by the Spanish portion below

and the Spanish portion:

Mila,

Well that is very strange. If Text1 is not defined anywhere then you should get an error in the English portion. Do a text search of the full generated script and find out where that Text1 is defined for the English portion.

Thank you, all! I fixed it! I downloaded the original moving window and copy/pasted the definitions for Text1 through Text6 and it worked.
