Hi,

I am having trouble resolving an error code 11043 "unable to load image." I have image files listed in a List object. All the files are titled correctly, down to capitalization and are in the same folder as the E-studio and E-run files. The files themselves open fine on my computer but for whatever reason E-Prime is not able recognize or pull them correctly? Any trouble-shooting ideas to help with this? Anything would help! Thanks

Please let me know if that is okay.

Hi,

Just a basic troubleshooting suggestion, have you added the extension of the file correctly, eg. Check if the files are png and you have added that only?

"Better to start from success than from failure."

I would do the following:

* Run the PictureRT example that comes installed with E-Prime and make sure that that works.

* If PictureRT works, then try using my own image files in that known working experiment program.

* If that works, then try making my own experiment program that does nothing but show my image files.

I would especially be on the lookout for invisible characters such as spaces at the ends of my file names and at the ends of my entries in E-Prime. Time and again I have found people tripped up by that.

BTW, file names should not be case sensitive in E-Prime, but you could easily test that with any already working program plus image.

Hi David,

Thanks so much for your help! There are image files that are attached on their own in the previous blocks on this E-Prime task that show up with no issues. Because they are individually attached I can go in and select the exact file to pull from, however, the same does not apply when they are written out in a List. Is there a way to somehow select all the images and attach them through properties? Hope this makes sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So far so good. You have image files and their file names working in E-Prime. Now you want to get this working with a List in E-Prime.

The PictureRT example that comes installed with E-Prime will show you how to use images in a List. As an exercise, copy some of your image files to the PictureRT folder, then add your image file to the TrialList either by adding extra rows or by replacing file names in the Stimulus column there.

If you have not already, you should also work through the PictureRT tutorial in Appendix C of the E-Prime 2 User's Guide (comes as a .pdf with EP2). If you do not have access to the EP2 User's Guide then I will see if I can make one available to you. Beyond that, you would also find it worthwhile to go through "The E-Primer" (www.e-primer.com/2019/05/new-e-primer-second-edition.html), co-authored by Michiel Spapé, one of the top contributors to this Group -- every lab that uses E-Prime should get themselves a copy of this.

Hi,
Just one addition to David's last comment on spaces and such. E-Prime tells you which image is failing (trying to load image, etc) in the debug info, but it's not always convenient to notice what goes on. Let's say you are loading the image using an attribute [imagefile]. Add an inline before the slide or imagedisplay and write:
Debug.Print "Going to show image: " & c.getattrib("imagefile") & "."

There you go. As David says, spaces tend to trip things up, so the code will show something like "Going to show THISIMAGE .", and it will be obvious that "THISIMAGE" is actually defined as "THISIMAGE " in the list, so you need to delete the additional space.
Another common problem is that the ImageDisplay or such is calling the attribute [imagefile], but imagefile is the filename without extension (.jpg or .bmp or such), as above. You can fix that problem by making it [imagefile].jpg instead (if it's jpg).

By the way, in The E-primer first edition, I wrote that .bmp is better than .jpg, but compressed file sizes vary, causing differences in load times. I found that although this is still the case, modern harddrives (SSD, but even new HDDs) cache means that there is quite a lot of variation between loading image files anyway, and that this variation increases as a function of file size. That means that a smaller file is generally better for timing than larger ones, so JPGs are preferred for timing while uncompressed BMPs are better for visual perception. PNGs offer a reasonable compromise, doing lossless compression.

HTH,
Michiel
