Copying, pasting, and then "Unlinking" List objects - to modify one but not the other

Hi,

I've tried all the search terms I can think of relating to what I would call "unlinking two objects", but no luck finding the solution. What I want to do is copy my Practice Trials List and paste it again as my Main Trials List. This I have done. However, I now need to make some modifications to the Main Trials List. Unfortunately, anything I change in one, changes in the other. I have tried renaming, but it just renames in the other list also. Is there an option to "unlink" procedures/lists once they have been copied so I can modify one and not the other?

Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply!! :)

To elaborate, when I copy the Practice Trial List and paste to create a Trial List, the dialogue window says "the object you are pasting contains child objects. Would you like to paste all of the child objects in addition to the primary object?" Yes or No (see link below). Yes creates an unlinked Trial List but all the child objects are unlinked too, and I can't find a way to re-link the ones I want (copy and pasting a child object from Prac List that I want to link does not work and just creates another unlinked child object with a new name). Choosing No creates the original problem - everything is linked and no way to modify any of the child objects separately. I want some of the child objects to update in both Prac List and Trial List and others not to.

You have three basic options when repurposing an existing List:

1) Simply re-use the entire List as-is -- this happens when you simply
drag a List from one Procedure to another, or drag it from the Browser
into a Procedure.

2) Make a separate copy of the existing List, and containing separate
copies of *everything* used by the List.

3) Make a separate copy of the existing List, while re-using
*everything* as-is from the List.

(Note that I distinguish between "re-using" and "copying", as I teach in
my online E-Prime 2.0 course.)

Note that these are "all or nothing" options -- there is no option to
make separate copies of some objects from a List while simply reusing
other objects, and for that matter I cannot think of how you would
design such an operation.

Instead, if I want to start a new List based on an existing List, I
would start by doing either (1), (2), or (3), whichever seemed to start
me closest to my goal. From there I would just re-use, add, subtract,
and modify as needed.

Hi David,

Thank you so much for answering my rookie question (hope to get up to speed with this program asap!). It was (e.g) to present the same stimuli objects in each list but with modified feedback scripts/slide durations etc. I'm glad there's not a quicker way I'm missing then. Could you possibly point me to a link for your online course? Sounds like it could be very helpful! Thank you.
