Fibre
drop funding for schools
Education Minister Anne Tolley and Communications and Information Technology
Minister Steven Joyce announced on October 28 that state and state-integrated
schools will receive wholly funded fibre drops under the Government’s
planned fibre rollout.
The fibre drop (connection of fibre across the school grounds and into the
school from the street) will be undertaken as part of the Government’s
Ultra Fast Broadband and Rural Broadband Initiatives, under which fibre
deployment is expected to commence early next year.
Up until now schools connecting to fibre have been required to contribute to
the fibre drop cost (20% for state and 32% for state integrated schools). The
change means that no further subsidies will be available to fund fibre drops to
schools undertaken in advance of the national fibre rollout programme.
