ARUSHA: THE Aga Khan Health Services, Tanzania (AKHST), under the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), has donated chemotherapy equipment worth 55m/- to support cancer treatment services at Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital in Arusha.

The donation, provided through the East Africa Comprehensive Women Cancer Project (EA-CwCP), included patient recliners, infusion pumps and bio-safety equipment aimed at improving chemotherapy service delivery and ensuring the safety of both patients and healthcare workers.

Speaking in Arusha yesterday, Arusha District Administrative Secretary, Mr Jacob Rombo, expressed gratitude to AKHST for its continued support in strengthening cancer care services.

He said the equipment will significantly improve chemotherapy services and enhance safety for healthcare providers.

AKHST representative Mr Murtazar Mukhtar said the institution remains committed to supporting government efforts through investment in equipment, infrastructure and training.

“This contribution forms part of our broader strategy to combat cancer and other noncommunicable diseases by strengthening health systems and improving access to quality care,” he said.

The East Africa Comprehensive Women Cancer Project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and focuses on prevention, early detection and treatment of women’s cancers, particularly breast and cervical cancer, as well as promoting HPV vaccination for girls aged 8 to 14 across East Africa.

Medical Officer in Charge at Mount Meru Hospital, Dr Alex Ernest, said the new services and equipment will improve service delivery and reduce costs for patients who previously travelled long distances for treatment.

Have an excellent day.
