Mawlana Hazar Imam and the Muslim Council of Elders discuss strengthening cooperation

The Muslim Council of Elders and Mawlana Hazar Imam held a meeting on Sunday 19 October to enhance joint cooperation in promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue, empowering youth, fostering moderation, and raising awareness on the ethical use of artificial intelligence to serve humanity. Hazar Imam was accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad.

During the meeting, His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam emphasised the depth of relations between the Muslim Council of Elders and the Aga Khan Development Network, praising the Network’s distinguished role in supporting education, culture, and sustainable development across the world. He also noted that both organisations share a common belief in the values of peace, tolerance, coexistence, and service to all people regardless of faith, race, or culture—guided by a shared vision of a more just and united world.

The complexity of the Ummah has a long history. Some of the most glorious chapters in Islamic history were purposefully built on the principle of inclusiveness — it was a matter of state policy to pursue excellence through pluralism. This was true from the time of the Abbasids in Baghdad and the Fatimids in Cairo over 1,000 years ago. It was true in Afghanistan and Timbuktu in Mali, and later with the Safavids in Iran, the Mughals in India, the Uzbeks in Bukhara, and Ottomans in Turkey.

Mawlana Shah Karim, Ottawa, February 2014

Stirrings of the Soul

O people of the world, come together in truth,
For the light of guidance shines for all.
The call is not for one tribe or tongue,
But for hearts that seek the path of unity.
