error "unable to inject: exec of |(null)| failed" runing bbcount on windows 10 32 bit

I've unzipped the standard DynamoRIO-Windows-9.0.1, and tried to run

the following from the root of the installation:

bin32\drrun.exe -verbose -debug -loglevel 4 -c samples\bin32\bbcount.dll -- calc

The output is:

INFO: client 0 path: C:\temp\DynamoRIO-Windows-9.0.1\samples\bin32\bbcount.dll
INFO: targeting application: "C:\Windows\system32\calc.exe"
INFO: app cmdline:  "calc"
INFO: configuration directory is "C:\Users\admin/dynamorio"
INFO: created child with pid 7784 for C:\Windows\system32\calc.exe
INFO: registering client with id=0 path=|C:\temp\DynamoRIO-Windows-9.0.1\samples\bin32\bbcount.dll| ops=||
ERROR: unable to inject: exec of |(null)| failed

Any ideas?
