Hi everyone,
I have been following some leads on churches and also contacted William Peace Univ.  Everyone has been very friendly, but nobody wants to rent us space.

I have had an idea,  and wanted to run it past all of you:

Rent space in a strip mall.  Raleigh Charter did this for years before moving into their own building.  And, I discovered that Research Triangle High School occupies space in a strip mall.  (they have 8 classrooms and a space  that they've set up to resemble a coffee shop... no cafeteria but also has some kind of bio. lab)

So, I am wondering if anyone has a real estate agent  friend or family member or friendly acquaintance who might have experience helping locate rental space like this.

It would be good for a few reasons:  it would be 'our own' space.  Teachers wouldn't have to take down posters from other classes, it would feel more like 'ours'.  It would, potentially, be enough space for fall of 2014 and for many years to come as we added more grades/classrooms.  We could look for a location that was convenient to highways, bus stops etc...

Problems might include: no outside play area, no kitchen...

Just wanting to get some feedback on this.
Thanks
Laura Brain

Laura,

Thank you for doing all this legwork! I don't think strip mall space would preclude a kitchen - we might get lucky and find a small restaurant space included. And someplace like Lowe's has a mini-kitchen in the worker's space. I do not think it's a bad idea, but definitely we were hoping for a contained outdoor space as well.

Right now there is an abundance of unused strip mall space around. I know that Escazu and the restaurant next to it were moving to a bigger space nearby; I can't remember the name of the business who had previously occupied that spot, but really there is empty space out there.

Laura,
Just a few ideas about empty spaces.  There is a restaurant building (TGI Friday's) empty in Beaver Creek in Apex.  There are a lot of empty spaces at Crossroads close to Best Buy and Plato's Closet.

Bill is planning to come to the December 16 meeting.

I mentioned this to Laura yesterday but there is a vacant day care facility around the corner from me at Hopson and Miami in RTP.  It may only be a short term solution as there is construction that will be taking place near that intersection but I will find out more details about it this week.

Another option may be space through Dorcas Ministries in Cary.  Their goal is to create a non-profit hub in the old Cary Plaza near the Bowling Alley on High House.  Here is a link to their information:  http://dorcas-cary.org/about_campaign/
