Vatican Council II:
"The
kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea"
Book of Jeremiah 18:1-6.
This word
came to Jeremiah from the LORD: Psalms 146(145):1b-2.3-4.5-6ab.
Praise the
LORD, O my soul; Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 13:47-53.
Again, the
kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of
every kind. |
Vatican Council II
Constitution on the Church in the modern world « Gaudium et spes », § 39, 2-4
While we are warned that it profits a man nothing if he gain the whole world
and lose himself,(Lk 9,25) the expectation of a new earth must not weaken but
rather stimulate our concern for cultivating this one. For here grows the body
of a new human family, a body which even now is able to give some kind of
foreshadowing of the new age. Hence, while earthly progress must be carefully
distinguished from the growth of Christ's kingdom, to the extent that the
former can contribute to the better ordering of human society, it is of vital
concern to the Kingdom of God |

Saint Bernard :
"Is
he not the carpenter's son?"
Book of Jeremiah 26:1-9.
In the
beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this
message came from the LORD: Psalms 69(68):5.8-10.14.
Those
outnumber the hairs of my head
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 13:54-58.
He came to
his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were
astonished and said, "Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? |
Saint Bernard (1091-1153), Cistercian monk and doctor of the Church
2nd sermon on the words of the Gospel : «The angel Gabriel was sent» §16 (trans. J.C. Hedley, alt.),
Brethren, do you recall the patriarch Joseph..., from whom Joseph, the husband
of Mary, inherited not only the name but the purity, innocence and grace... To
the Joseph of old was given interpretation of dreams (Gn 40;41), to the new
Joseph a share in heavenly secrets. His predecessor kept a store of wheat, not
for himself but for the whole nation; the latter became the guardian of the
living bread from heaven that would give life to the whole world as to himself
(Jn 6,51). A “good and faithful servant” (Mt 25,21) was the Joseph to whom
Mary, the mother of the Savior, was espoused; a “faithful and prudent servant”
(Mt 24,45) whom our Lord chose for the comfort of his mother and the fatherly
support of his humanity, as well as the trustworthy co-operator of his design
for the world. |

Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The
martyrdom of John the Baptist, witness to the truth
Book of Jeremiah 26:11-16.24.
The
priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people, "This man
deserves death; he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with
your own ears." Psalms 69(68):15-16.30-31.33-34.
Rescue me
out of the mire; may I not sink!
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 14:1-12.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
§ 2471-2474
Before Pilate, Christ proclaims that he "has come into the world, to bear
witness to the truth," (Jn 18,37). The Christian is not to "be ashamed then of
testifying to our Lord," (2Tim 1,8). In situations that require witness to the
faith, the Christian must profess it without equivocation, after the example
of St. Paul before his judges. We must keep "a clear conscience toward God and
toward men," (Acts 24,16). |

Peter the Venerable :
“His
face shone like the sun” (Mt 17,2)
Book of Daniel 7:9-10.13-14.
As I watched : Thrones were set up and the Ancient One took his throne. His
clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool ; His
throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. Psalms 97(96):1-2.5-6.9.
The LORD
is king; let the earth rejoice;
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 9:2-10.
Jesus took
Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them, |
Peter the Venerable (1092-1156), Abbot of Cluny
Sermon 1 pour la Transfiguration ; PL 189, 959
What was surprising about Jesus' face becoming like the sun since he himself
was the sun? He was indeed the sun, but the sun hidden behind a cloud. Now,
for a moment, the cloud dispersed and he shone out. What is this cloud that
dispersed? It was not so much the flesh but the weakness of the flesh that
disappeared for a moment. |

Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity :
"Those
who were in the boat did him homage"
Book of Jeremiah 30:1-2.12-15.18-22.
The
following message came to Jeremiah from the LORD: Psalms 102(101):16-18.19-21.29.22-23.
The
nations shall revere your name, O LORD,
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 14:22-36.
Then he
made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while
he dismissed the crowds. |
Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906), Carmelite
Last retreat, 20-21 (©Institute of Carmelite studies)
"And they fall down and worship Him and they cast down their crowns before the
throne, saying, Worthy are you, 0 Lord, to receive glory and honor and power”
(Rev 4,10f.) How can I imitate in the heaven of my soul this unceasing
occupation of the blessed in the Heaven of glory? How can I sustain this
uninterrupted praise and adoration? Saint Paul gives me light on this when he
writes to his followers his wish that "the Father would strengthen them
inwardly with power through His Spirit so that Christ would dwell through
faith in their hearts, and so that they would be rooted and grounded in love"
(cf. Eph 3,16f.). To be rooted and grounded in love: such, it seems to me, is
the condition for worthily fulfilling its work as “praise of glory” (Eph
1,6.12.14). The soul that penetrates and dwells in these "depths of God"...
and thus does everything "in Him, with Him, by Him and for Him"... , this
soul, by each of its movements, it aspirations, as well as by each of its
acts, however ordinary they may be, "is rooted" more deeply in Him whom it
loves. Everything within it pays homage to the thrice-holy God: it is so to
speak a perpetual Sanctus, an unceasing praise of glory! |

Saint Hilary :
"My
daughter is tormented by a demon"
Book of Jeremiah 31:1-7.
At that
time, says the LORD, I will be the God of all the tribes of Israel, and they
shall be my people. Book of Jeremiah 31:10.11-12ab.13.
Hear the
word of the LORD, O nations,
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 15:21-28.
Then Jesus
went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. |
Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Church
Commentary on Saint Matthew's Gospel, 15 ; SC 258
This gentile Canaanite woman no longer needs healing herself since she
confesses Christ as Lord and Son of David. But she begs for help for her
daughter, that is to say, for the crowd of Gentiles held captive under the
domination of unclean spirits. Our Lord is silent, preserving for Israel with
his silence the honor of salvation... Bearing in himself the mystery of the
Father's will, he answers that he was sent to the lost sheep of Israel so that
it might be clearly seen that the daughter of the Canaanite woman is the
symbol of the Church... This doesn't mean that salvation was not to be given
to the gentiles but that our Lord had come “to his own and his own people” (Jn
1,11) and he was waiting for the firstfruits of the faith from the people from
whom he had come forth; the rest would be saved later through the preaching of
the apostles... |

Saint Leo the Great :
“On
this rock I will build my church.”
Book of Jeremiah 31:31-34.
The days
are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of
Israel and the house of Judah. Psalms 51(50):12-13.14-15.18-19.
A clean
heart create for me, O God,
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 16:13-23.
When Jesus
went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, «Who do
people say that the Son of Man is?» |
Saint Leo the Great (?-c.461), Pope and Doctor of the Church
Sermon on the anniversary of his ordination as bishop
My brethren, when it comes to fulfilling my duties as a bishop, I find
myself weak and ineffective, weighed down by the weakness of my own condition,
while at the same time I want to act generously and courageously. However, I
draw my strength from the untiring intercession of the almighty and eternal
Priest who, like us but equal to the Father, lowered his divinity to our side
and raised us up to God. The decrees he has made give me a just and holy joy.
For while he delegated many pastors to care for his flock, he did not abandon
watching over his beloved sheep. Thanks to that fundamental and eternal help,
I in turn have received the protection and support of the apostle Peter, who
also does not forsake his function. This solid foundation, on which the whole
of the Church is built, never wearies of carrying the whole weight of the
building that rests upon it. |

Saint Augustine :
"Whoever
loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will
preserve it for eternal life"
Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-10.
Consider
this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
bountifully will also reap bountifully. Psalms 112(111):1-2.5-6.7-8.9.
Blessed
the man who fears the LORD,
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 12:24-26.
Amen,
amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it
remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. |
Saint Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo (North Africa) and Doctor of the
Church
Sermon 304 ; PL 38, 1385 (trans. cf Breviary 10/08)
The blessed Laurence carried out the office of deacon in the Church of Rome.
In that office he administered Christ's sacred blood to the faithful; and for
Christ's sake he shed his own blood. The blessed apostle John clearly
expounded the mystery of the Lord's Supper when he said: “Just as Christ laid
down his life for us, so should we lay down our lives for our brothers” (1Jn
3,16). Saint Laurence understood this and acted accordingly. His
self-sacrifice was similar in kind to that which he received at the altar. He
loved Christ in his life and imitated him in death. |
