Change direction ignored for milling?

I've been generating gcode for a few years for milling metal and plastic - no problems. I'm doing wood now and I'd like to travel in the opposite direction - 'climb milling' - to reduce splintering. Cutter compensation (right, in this case) generates the correct path, but changing the direction has no effect. Is there some setting that I'm missing?
