I believe the latter to be the case. The superheroes present a very simple solution to the complexities of the modern world. The various shades of grey that line the surface of apparently "deeper" superhero films, such as Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, are mere distractions from the utter ridiculousness of the core concept: a man in a costume fighting crime! As such, taking superhero fare seriously amplifies both its absurdity and fascist overtones. The word fascist is frequently misapplied, but it does fit with the superhero aesthetic, which is about one thing and one thing only: violence. Superheroes overpower their opponents with brute force, and as such are the most hideous display of power-worship.
At its most basic level, the film feigns concern towards how revenge can be a bottomless pit. Violence doesn't merely escalate in the film, it consumes all. The level of terror multiples geometrically, as one death begets two, and then four, etc. Millar's original comic is considered by halfwits as a post-structuralist work, but this sort of reading is only valid for armchair proponents of even the real-world history of violence being its own fiction. Of course, this is all rubbish. The uneven tone of the violence contributes to the confusion. During one memorable scene (for all the wrong reasons), a gigantic ex-KGB agent called Mother Russia dispatches ten police officers in increasingly violent ways as a sped-up, trance version of the Tetris theme plays. I am not sure what reaction Wadlow was going for, but I was sickened. This did not make me reassess my position towards vigilantism or violence, seeing as I am not a sociopath. I don't need a superhero film to tell me that kicking the living crap out of people is wrong.
The film takes the superhero genre and looks at it from our perspective as mere, powerless humans. Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is an average high school geek who spends much of his time reading comics, checking his MySpace, pining after women and desperately wanting to become a superhero. After getting mugged in an alleyway, Dave decides to take matters into his own hands, leading him to buy a scuba suit, don a mask and fight for justice as Kick-Ass.
Overall, the Kick-Ass movie seems to have done some good for the franchise ultimately, as Kick-Ass 2, the book, is *substantially* better than its six-color predecessor. Kick-Ass 2 is not just a mere Empire Strikes Back to the A New Hope that was Kick-Ass, rather the sequel that makes the original look like The Star Wars Holiday Special. Likewise, if the trailer is any indication, Kick-Ass 2 the movie will axe-kick our doubts into a doped-up ragdoll lost in a Jim Carrey-coated ecstasy.
Why is she so kick-ass? When I was a kid, I was completely obsessed with fairy tales, fantasy, and sword-and-sorcery type adventures. In many of the traditional tales, princesses are either mere objects of a quest, something to be rescued and won by the prince, or at the best are on the fringes of all of the action. In Eilonwy, for the first time I found a character who reminded me of myself - a little stubborn, prone to walking around barefoot, and right in the middle of the action - because she wouldn't have it any other way. Eilonwy could do magic, but she could also swing a sword, shoot a bow and arrow, and think her way out of a jam. That's the kind of Disney Princess I can get behind.

The picture is tracking at over/under $20 million for the weekend, which is close to the $19 million that the first film debuted to.
Once we get to that point for the second time, the film momentarily springs to life as David finds himself in the company of a self-styled 'Justice Forever' superhero squad. Led by Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey, in a terrifically grounded and thoughtful supporting turn that's better than the film deserves), the members of Justice Forever are mourning the loss of a child or family member, they are wounded souls trying to make sense of an irrational world. This bunch of do-gooders bring about the film's only interesting idea: That heroism is as much about merely doing good deeds for those in need as it is about catching bad guys. But that concept, around which you could shape an entire movie, is discarded once the other subplot comes into form, that of Chris D'Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), the now-orphaned son of the prior film's arch villain crime boss, deciding to form his own band of super villains and cause chaos around the city.
Kick-Ass was not a genre masterpiece, but it was a real movie with something to say about superhero fantasies in the real world and the happy medium between going full-vigilante and merely watching the world go to hell. It boasted strong acting, a few solid action beats, a rich and colorful palette, and a story that made sense from point A to point B. Kick-Ass 2 feels like what it arguably is: a cheap-looking and arbitrary sequel that has nothing new to offer in terms of story or ideas. Kick-Ass was also a movie intended for adults, or at least older teens. Kick-Ass 2 feels like the downward shift suffered between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, trading a certain grounded realism and overall quality for scatter-shot comedy, soft action, and a kid-friendly tone. At least the TMNT franchise was intended for kids in the first place, but the R-rated Kick-Ass series was supposed to basically criticize the very idea of stuffing superhero fantasies down the throats of its younger audience.
