Cao Yu is regarded China's foremost modern playwright, theater educator, and the founding father of the country's modern drama. He is credited with changing the direction of 20th century Chinese theater. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth this year, many events and activities are being held in and out of China, including symposia, lectures, an international conference, exhibitions in mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan.. As part of the worldwide celebrations, the Renwen Society at China Institute and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University present a symposium on Cao Yu on Saturday, November 13, 2010, 2 to 5 pm. Speakers at the symposium include:

Wan Fang, Cao Yu's daughter, who herself is an accomplished novelist, screen writer and playwright

Fei, Chunfang, Professor of English & Drama, and Director of Center for American Studies East China Normal University in Shanghai, China

Kent Paul, Theater director who directed Cao Yu's Peking Man, which was performed at Columbia University in 1980

Ben Wang, Senior professor at the UN and China Institute and Co-Chair of the Renwen Society.
