Dear Gulati,
You are obviously a learned man, and very willing to share your knowledge with us. In the future, I hope you can refrain from the use of profanity in your musings.

God within and God without perform two different functions in so far as the human being is concerned.
God within as the soul offers guidance for right action - God without (above) provides all knowledge.

It is reached by meditating deeply in the heart.
When you listen to shabad kirtan blocking out mental activity, you are trying to form the connection with naam.
It is an effort at awakening the soul that lies dormant in us.
So long as it is dormant it is not Guru.
God is there within but we must make him our Guru.

I read that hymn as " Sabh ton Vada Satguru, Nanak jin Kar Rakhi Meree": Note the Comma place change the meaning; Nanak says God is my protector
Translated as; God is supreme who is my protector and not Nanak (Arjan Dev) is supreme who is my protector.
What I wanted to say is prefix before Guru refers to God. I prefer not to say that Waheguru means Guru with in.( you can say God with in).
Sorry for the confusion. As you know that I read Guru Granth Sahib daily even though these days about 10 pages daily (Whole scripture twice a year.

Dear Dr Kahlon,

Reading about your missive after a long time.

First of all I want to mention for the information of all the members of Understanding Sikhism that the word, WHEGURU, has neither been used by Guru Nanak or by any other Sikh Guru whose bani is incorporated in the AGGS.
The other point I want to make it clear that the GURU of Nanak is SABD. Please look into my following article for details:

The word is not used by the Gurus or the Bhagats.
So there is very little internal sense of the Gurbani to guide one.
Sikhs today accept its meaning as "wondorous Guru" or WAAH GURU.
Before we build on the topic further, watch these two videos to serve as a base for further discussion.

Dear all
In spite of resistance from within I tried to give a factual explanation from Gurbani.
For more details please read Suwaye Mahle Chauthe ke by Bhatt Gayand on page 1402 of Guru Granth Sahib where this word is written for more than 12 times.
Without looking into any facts, Mr Devinder Singh Gulati is saying it’s a laughable explanation. This means he may be ignorant or taking Guru Granth Sahib a laughable Holy Scripture.
I didn’t join this group but have been receiving emails for long time and I never respond to any emails.
By this email I request the administration of this group to delete my name and don’t send any email to me in future.

My only input that ardh urdh wouldn't mean that you can only say vahe while inhale and guru as you exhale... Per my understanding here it means while we breath we need to chant... We shouldn't be emphasising that our concentration shall remain on what we speak while we inhale or exhale.. rather it should be spontaneous that we chant all the time ... without a mental stress of what to utter when the breath goes in and what to utter as it comes out... Sehaj naal ho jave bus...
Bhul chukk maaf karni ji...

Respected Jagjit Singh ji;

I could not not find any reference in SGGS where Sikhs are encouraged to VAHIGURU JAPNA. There are references to NAAMU JAPNA. Also other names like RAM, GOBIND, HARI Etc. JAPNA , but never a mention of VAHIGURU JAPNA.

Please help if you can find such a reference in SGGS.

You may be right that there may be no direct  mention of Waheguru Japna in SGGS but  we all do it in praise  of  it , being our living Guru  .
We have already accepted that

Bani Guru

I hope this simple explanation  may help in solving this Conundrum creeping in our minds.

Dear holy souls,
Just to share my personal experience:
I get great Peace through my INVOLUNTARY recitation of Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru, all the time(audibly or silently). I have been doing it since the death of my beloved wife, 14 years ago.
To me, this holy word stands for God Almighty who is my Sole Protector and Mentor. Waheguru is Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent.

Guru pyaaree Sangat Jio,

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh.

A salutation for the Khalsa is for Sikh Sangat as well.
So long as we understand that this salutation was used by Bhat Gyand in admiration of Guru RamDas ji and not for God in any form or any manner; we can say it and even chant it if you like. But, keep in mind that you are admiring the Sikh Guru  Sahiban and the Guru Granth Sahib. Not any God. From Gurbani we have learnt that the Sikh Guru Sahiban and the exalted Bhagats were similar to God that we all praise Him.
So, please do chant or pray Waheguru for admiring Guru Sahiban and the Guru Granth Sahib.
God in The Gurbani is featureless, formless, unfathomable, and indefinable. So long your soul understands it and accepts the happenings around you as the natural phenomena, you will be feeling the God is with you in every aspect.

The two paths to finding God are laid out at page 1159 of Gurbani:

My heart is pure, and so I have seen the Lord within. Searching, searching within the self, Kabeer has met the Lord. ||4||7|| I focus my meditation on my inner self, deep within. In the first chakra, the root chakra, I have grasped the reins and tied them. I have firmly placed the moon above the sun. The sun blazes forth at the western gate. Through the central channel of the Shushmanaa, it rises up above my head. ||2|| There is a stone at that western gate, and above that stone, is another window. Above that window is the Tenth Gate. Says Kabeer, it has no end or limitation. ||3||2||10||” Kabeer  https://www.searchgurbani.com/guru-granth-sahib/ang/1159

Kabir prefers to be guided by the Guru within. The soul is a portion of the divine and is therefore like a moon to the sun that blazes away above the head.

To break the obstruction between the mind and the all-knowledge beyond, one has to raise the kundalini force.

But Kabir has tied it down at its very first station. He is not at all allured by the all-knowledge. But he knows it - he is aware of that path too.

Respected Jas Singh ji;

I am honored and humbled to be among Sikh scholars.

It is so nice to know that Sikhs are trying to understand Guru Nanak Sahib’s message in SGGS.

As est as I know Guru Nanak’s Bani enshrined in SGGS, Guru Nanak Sahib never used Many a names for the Creator , but not VAHIGURU.
In fact none of the Guru Sahib whose Bani is enshrined in SGGS refereed the Creator by VAHIGURU.

So, I would very much like to know your basis to claim that by the word, “SABAD” in Sidh ghost, Guru Nanak Sahib implied VAHIGURU.

Please oblige.

Respected GLZ SADH SANGAT JIO.
G UR FATEH. Devinder Singh Gulati and like him are trying to misguide the Sikhs to follow Brahmanical interpretations that are incorporated into AGGS.
Bhai Gurdas ji is certainly a well educated and brilliant person  to understand and scribe the Aad Guru,
Granth Sahib. As pointed out that Sikhi has been attack by the Brahmans right from the outset, Fortunately Guru Arjan Sahib ji wrote Aad Guru Granth Sahib in such a manner that nothing. Could be added or removed without permission by the Guru or  the SADH Sangat.

Composition style of Bhai Gurdas ji has been discussed in previous discussions on the subject of Vahiguru  being manipulated by the Braimans. Most of his Vars are in  even number of stanzas except for the first parred. First paurree is the one that contains composition of Vahiguru  based upon the names of Hindu deities like V for Vishnu and. H for Hari etc.etc.
The paurree is number 49 which makes outside the style of composing Vars in even number-stanzas.

We have recently discussed what Nam is and how it should be realized to assimilate in Your memory for regular meditation.
As it has been pointed out that the term .’Vahiguru’ is reflecting admiration of the Guru Sahiban and not reflecting  God or any of Its derivative.
Guru’s recommendation to utter is “ Bolo Sach Nam Kartar”
And whenever Guru ji has to address God they used the term ‘prabh, prabhu, prabh ji”.
Prabh ji Gunn Gaavaan nith taere
Prabh ji khasmaana ker piarae, burae bhalae hum theaare
I understand that everybody is reading GGS so e everybody can refer to the point of Guru ji subjecting God as Prabhji.

Kabir Ji was not a scientist, but his reflection on Soul and God in this Shabad aligns with the modern scientific understanding of conscious and super-conscious. Kabir ji did all the thinking with a concentration in the brain and realized the alignment of his mind with the Soul (Limbic System in the brain). In the Amygdala component of the Limbic system gathers our thoughts, analyzed further in the hippocampus area in the medial aspect of the temporal lobe of the brain. So what Kabir ji realized was in his medial aspect of the temporal lobe of the brain (that is, above the ear). It is the same description by the Yogies as well. Rarely an innocent person concentrating similarly gets the same realization.
It is good to understand old philosophy scientifically in 2021.

Balbinder Singh ji,
"Wonderful Guru" is a laughable explanation as my friend pointed out, whose email I have also quoted earlier -  a part of which I now repeat below:
Quote from ''The Riddles of God'' by Jalaludin Rumi (1207 - 1273), the Persian mystical poet, may help explain Wahe or Wahy

''So thou mayest understand His riddles and read both the covert and the overt.
Then upon thine ear will descend revelation (wahy).  What is Wahy?  A voice inaudible to sense-preception*.''

It is the inspiration of the prophets (wahy) .................. It is too deep for us mere mortals to understand.

The word, thus, pre-existed sikhism and is obviously borrowed from the islamic tradition and not your balle-balle.

Your man is using the contemporary wah = bravo / ''amazing'' to make up the rubbish explaination, when infact it is a lot deeper and more philosophical than this dumbed, whittled down explain.

I'm not surprised he settled for amazing?? for he doesn't even seem to have checked the contemporary meanings in any lexicon.
If he had, he might have concluded wah to stand for; strength, power, dealing/interaction, ploughing or even diarrhoea (in cattle).  Certainly smacks of the later in case of his selective, ill-informed idiocy - ie it is bull-shit.
============
This explanation is heartily embraced by Sikhi preachers today who themselves do not believe in soul (or rebirth).
Satpal says Sikhi is the practice of yoga and that Nanak is the king of yogis.
Yoga, he says, is union.
Union of what with what?

God has been well described in Japji Sahib and by Mool Mantra  .
As far as defination of Guru , we have to accept Sri Guru Granth Sahib as our living Guru. By reciting
Waheguru , we are preying for our living Guru .
Since commas are not used in SGGS , the contention as mentioned in the trailing mails is correct .
Sabh tey wada satgur
