"Dwarka may have ample land for an 18 hole golf course but it simply does not have the water to develop and maintain such a big facility. Maintaining the vast lawns in a golf course would require substantial quantity of water on a daily basis. If DDA draws this water from the underground water table, it is going to deplete the already threatened water table," says Anuj Sethi, a resident.
The sight of water tankers filling up water for Dwarka homes from a borewell located next to the DDA's proposed golf course site is telling enough. Dwarka, a sub city housing more than six lakh people is already facing acute water shortage.
The golf course, which is going to be spread over 173 acres is bigger than DDA's existing golf courses in Lado Sarai (110 acres) and Bhalaswa (100 acres). It is coming up in Sector 24, near the proposed Diplomatic Enclave. The project has got clearance from DDA's screening committee. It is proposed to have a club house, restaurant, conference hall, gymnasium, bar and swimming pool. The facility will be open to all on a pay and use basis. Already, there are voices of protest from the residents. Says Diwan Singh, an environmental activist, "We have long been saying that the DDA should not develop anything without making arrangement for water. It did this while developing Dwarka. The golf course will be a major consumer." He suggests that turning the area into a city forest would help recharge the water table.
DDA officials promise that the project will not put pressure on the water resources. "A storm water drain passes next to the golf course site. We plan to clean this water and then use it to develop and maintain the golf course," says a senior DDA official. Some people see the brighter side of it. "A golf course is still better than building more housing societies, which will put extreme pressure on the water resources. A golf course will not involve much construction and if needed, it can always be converted into a green area with more trees," says Sunanda Madan, a resident.
Water guzzling schemes must be.kept in abeyance till Dwarka residents get desired water.

There are a good o/o of residents eagerly awaiting inauguration of a G.Course in Dwarka, including some DF GB Members. Let us not disappoint them. At G.Course they will be consuming untreated water (tubewell) for greenery. If housing is allotted , they would consume big quantity of treated water & Dwarka's population would increase. Such big open green landspace would give pleasant look & will help Dwarka breath a little fresh air, less pollution. Therefore, let us vote for a G.Course. P.Menon Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android |
