Voices of dissent over DDA golf course in Dwarka
29 Nov 2014 ;Hindustan Times (Delhi); Asheesh Mamgain asheesh...@hindustantimes.com

With the newly installed message boards, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is all set to start work to make an 18 hole golf course in Dwarka. The work is expected to start in a couple of months. But the area environmentalists and residents' bodies are protesting against the project since it is expected to be a water guzzler.
S BURMAULA / HT PHOTO DDA officials have promised the residents that a golf course at this site will not put pressure on the water resources.

"Dwarka may have ample land for an 18 hole golf course but it simply does not have the water to develop and maintain such a big facility. Maintaining the vast lawns in a golf course would require substantial quantity of water on a daily basis. If DDA draws this water from the underground water table, it is going to deplete the already threatened water table," says Anuj Sethi, a resident.

The sight of water tankers filling up water for Dwarka homes from a borewell located next to the DDA's proposed golf course site is telling enough. Dwarka, a sub city housing more than six lakh people is already facing acute water shortage.

The golf course, which is going to be spread over 173 acres is bigger than DDA's existing golf courses in Lado Sarai (110 acres) and Bhalaswa (100 acres). It is coming up in Sector 24, near the proposed Diplomatic Enclave. The project has got clearance from DDA's screening committee. It is proposed to have a club house, restaurant, conference hall, gymnasium, bar and swimming pool. The facility will be open to all on a pay and use basis. Already, there are voices of protest from the residents. Says Diwan Singh, an environmental activist, "We have long been saying that the DDA should not develop anything without making arrangement for water. It did this while developing Dwarka. The golf course will be a major consumer." He suggests that turning the area into a city forest would help recharge the water table.

DDA officials promise that the project will not put pressure on the water resources. "A storm water drain passes next to the golf course site. We plan to clean this water and then use it to develop and maintain the golf course," says a senior DDA official. Some people see the brighter side of it. "A golf course is still better than building more housing societies, which will put extreme pressure on the water resources. A golf course will not involve much construction and if needed, it can always be converted into a green area with more trees," says Sunanda Madan, a resident.

Water guzzling schemes must be.kept in abeyance till Dwarka residents get desired water.

I agree with Diwan Singh views of converting this vacant land into city forest instead of golf course. Moreover the storm drain will not serve the purpose, as NCR is mostly a rain scanty area - which is also why the water harvesting systems across the societies have failed mostly.

The opinion of Sunanda Mohan that "A golf course is still better than building more housing societies, which will put extreme pressure on the water resources. A golf course will not involve much construction and if needed, it can always be converted into a green area with more trees," are right on course.

While I wish a city forest is a much better choice, but having a Golf Course is better than more Societies or other construction projects that would have been  a permanent drain on already scarce available resources.

There are a good o/o of residents eagerly awaiting inauguration of a G.Course in Dwarka, including some DF GB Members. Let us not disappoint them.

At G.Course they will be consuming untreated water (tubewell) for greenery.

If housing is allotted , they would consume big quantity of treated water & Dwarka's population would increase.

Such big open green landspace would give pleasant look & will help Dwarka breath a little fresh air, less pollution.

Therefore, let us vote for a G.Course.

Delhi's national bird is"Goraiya" which is difficult to find now a day. Why not convert the Golf land into woodland for providing space for avians and other natural creatures. It is being noticed that Najafgarh drain and jheel is becoming more popular than Okhla. Lets provide them a place and shelter for the local birds.
City needs more green cover and we must demand for it.

Why no one demand Delhi Golf Club with Rs. 1 lease amount to Run central Delhi and close it down ? Will it work
Why dont we demand Entire Development to stand still ?

I think these comments have no bearing on the decision makers and will never as we all know.

We have our own car .. How will I ask others not to buy Car ?
How can I ask a person who have no Flat not to buy ?

Yes
Development of non-populated area decision never an issue of the planners- why we all know..

There is lot need to be done.. now how and when and where also known..

the draw back is that we have discussion among a very few ... We only ELECT we dont have nothing else in our hand.. Even if there are few then also we have a Majority who give damn care (SANOO KI>>>>)

Dear Kumar, Vineet and Arun Bhai,

The need to convert the area into city forest is not just needed for Dwarka, but for entire West Delhi. Certainly, Dwarka would benefit most.
In view of five new mega cities coming up in rest of agricultural land beyond Dwarka, the need for this green buffer would rise much high. Presently, that area is a sink for pollution that generates in Dwarka and other colonies in West Delhi; but, imagine, when it itself become generator of polluting gases.

Secondly, Vineetji, the rain is never less. Its sufficient to sustain a 1000+ water bodies in past. Alwar, recieving less rainfall than Delhi has a pernnial river , Aravari, flowing all along the year.

Dear all
First the Proposed DDA Sports Complex of Sector 19 should be completed and handed over to the Dwarka residents. The new sports complex will benefit thousands of people specially children. Golf Course will be needed later not now. We all need a sports complex urgently. The sports complex at Sector 11 is so full that everyone has to line up to play and precious time is wasted. Membership also closed 4 years back. Where will others go.

regards
shubhi mehrotra

I suggest the membership concept to be cancelled. It should be Pay and Play everywhere. With memberships, the public property becomes right of a few handful people. Also I don't think, anybody will be harmed much with the Pay and Play Scheme.
