Dear All,

I solicit your feedback/suggestions on following issue.

I reside in Sec-12, Dwarka and hold a salaried account of Sec-18,
Noida HDFC branch. I only rarely visit branches to do cash deposit/
withdrawal transaction over the counter because of the time waste of
standing in line etc.

I went to Sec-5, Dwarka HDFC branch to do cash deposit on 25th
Nov, 2009. The counter lady told me that there is a memo on my account
that counter transactions are disabled. I was shocked since I am a
'Preferred' customer for the HDFC bank. I was advised to talk about it
with my mother branch/Personal banker for the same.

I talked with personal banker and also, the mother branch manager
since yesterday and following are the possible reasons they have told
me, they are still unaware of the exact reason:

1. high number of counter transactions at non-home branch
2. No cross-selling: that is, I havent bought the bank's other
services like credit card, demat account etc.

I only visit branches once in 3 months at most. Also, I hold HDFC
credit card.
My only concern is that these reasons are fraudulent since its not
informed to customer when one is opening/maintaining the account. I
wonder if I could contact RBI/consumer court since I have wasted so
much of my time tracking down these superfluous reasons for my denial
of service.

Appreciate your feedback,
Thanks,
Amit.

Dear all

The bank can not do this unless it is a condition at the time of opening the
account. You should talk to manager to amend the condition in your account,

I just talked with the branch manager, the reason they gave is that
the number of transactions is high (it was about 20, at most) in a
particular month. Mine being a savings account, the "normal"
transactions' volume would be 7-10 per month. Hence, they issue the
memo. Off those transactions, over the counter transactions would be
not more than 3.

I asked if this is a written diktat while opening the account but she
said, its not written.

She told me the solution if I 'upgrade' my account by buying one of
their products like FD etc.

I then asked, why did they decline the over the counter transactions
because I have only done 4-6 transactions over the counter in past 6
months. She, then, stopped explaining and asked me to contact another
senior person of the bank.

Thanks,
Amit.

probably reply is not satisfactory.

If possible try to take reply in writing or lodge complain with RBI.

Dear Amit,
You have every right to make a cash deposit  across the counter in HDFC Bank accounter anywhere in India. The Bank, specially in these days of Core-Banking/Electronic banking era cannot deny you this service just like that. At most they may levy a nominal charge for this service. The concept of branch banking in India has under gone a metamorphosis. With the introduction of Core-Banking facility in India, a customer is a customer of a Bank. Therefore a customer can avail various services, including counter services, at allthe branches of the Bank across India.
Have you obtained HDFC Branch objection in writing to accept your cash  deposit.?
They cannot deny you counter service without giving any advance notice in this regard.
Therefore, if you believe in my addvice,  I suggest you to :
1) again call on HDFC branch at sector-4 in Dwarka  and request them to accept your cash deposit at their counter for credit  into your account with HDFC Bank. If they decline to do so, don't enter to any vefbal argument with them. Only  request them to give you an objection memo in writing.
2) Then write to Bankers' Ombudsman a written complaint enclosing a copy of the Bank's objection memo.
3) Similary write a complaint letter to RBI against HDFC/their denial of ligitimate banking services.
I am sure with these action, within a coupleof months, the bank will arise from their deep slumber  and lethargy and start serving the customers like you in a proper way.
with regards,

Dear all,

Thanks alot for your feedback. I talked with the company's account
head about the same and he talked with the HDFC officer responsible
for resolving our issues. The reason for denial, as per him, was that
my salaried account was in "Band-2". The salaried account are divided
into various bands and since, most of the salaried accounts of the
company were in Band-1, he would upgrade my account too and that would
resolve the problem.

But still, its a shame how big banks blindly chase money without
providing corresponding service.

Thanks,
Amit.

Amit,

You should ask for the answer in writing from the Bank. If you go to
HDFC bank website, there must be Customer Grievance email and tel.
no./fax. You can immediately write to them and their Northern
Regional Head. Parellely, you can lodge online complaint with RBI if
you do not get any response within a week.

of late, it has been noticed, lot of pvt. banks have outsourced
staffing to contract employees, who keep changing and do not know lot
of rules. Customer service is getting diluted even in such banks.

Regards, Murali
