Dear Sir,

Sub: Saving of drinking water.

I have been a regular traveler in Dehradun Shatabdi Express Train. This train covers the distance from Delhi to Dehradun in around 5 hours & 30 minutes. Like other Shatabdi & Rajdhani trains where cost of meals in pre-included in fair, in this train as well a one liter water bottle is supplied to passengers immediately after boarding the train. Off-late I have observed that as high as more than 80% of the commuters are not able to consume this one liter water during journey period. As a result balance quantity goes waste. Due to air-conditioned atmosphere passengers are not exposed to heat, the water consumption remains at low level. I presume similar situation must be prevailing on other trains which even have lesser travelling time like Agra Shatabdi, Jaipur Shatabdi or other short duration trains where water is supplied by railways.

As thousands of passengers are travelling these trains morning & evening, the cumulative wastage of water is huge. Accordingly, it is suggested that water be supplied in 700 ml size bottle which may satisfy 90% of passengers. Since the plant producing Rail Neer is owned by subsidiary of railways, designing a new size should not be a problem. The reduced size would not only save precious water but also reduce size of bottle & save plastic having a favourable bearing on packaging cost as well as environment.

It is felt that water quantity saved would not only be equal to reduced quantity but would be much higher as the processing wastage would also be reduced. Till the time extra bottle is available on demand, no passenger would object to this reduced quantity.

Request suitable consideration to above suggestion be given.

Thanks

A very good suggestion in the national interest.
Apart from water wastage, the left out water is also susceptible to recirculation through the rack pickers, leading to supply of contaminated water.
