DJB takes steps to stem water crisis
TNN | May 10, 2013, 03.08AM IST
NEW DELHI: In the absence of additional water from the Munak canal, Delhi Jal Board has put in place several measures to ensure that water distribution is not affected this summer when demand is expected to rise.

The water utility will try and ensure an average production of 835 million gallons per day of water during the summer months. The water will be supplied to various areas through a network of 87 underground reservoirs. Officials said that about 200 km of old pipelines have been replaced while 333 major leak points were repaired in the last year.

"Preventive maintenance works like flushing of water mains, cleaning of underground reservoirs and servicing of equipments at the pump houses has been carried out to ensure uninterrupted functioning of water installations during summer. Additional tubewells have been installed or re-bored where it was technically possible. We have also acquired 400 new water tankers with stainless steel containers. These tankers are fitted with GPS tracking devices and the tankers will be monitored to ensure timely delivery of water," said an official.

Till the time planned water supply is extended to the Sangam Vihar group of colonies, DJB has installed 151 tubewells and deployed tankers in the area. Of these, 55 were installed in the last four years and another 12 are in the process of installation. About 80 to 90 tanker trips are being undertaken to the area each day.

"Nodal officers have been said to supervise functioning of water emergencies. Each maintenance division has a standby task force which can be deputed at short notice to deal with emergency situations. The enforcement department is also carrying out surprise checks at control rooms and at the consumers'. All 12 water laboratories have been upgraded for intensive checking." said the official.

We should get hold of these announcement and request you to ask these questions by filling RTI at appropriate time.  We may try to convert the paper work in ground work and bring the castles on the ground and if not, at least can expose the promise makers and pressurize them to fulfill their assurances.
