Timely road repair has always been a contentious issue in the capital. Delhi may have one of the widest road networks in the country, but certainly not the best. Potholes have become a routine and almost inherent feature of the city’s roads. These are rarely attended to promptly; instead, they are allowed to grow larger and cause daily inconvenience to lakhs of commuters. Only when the situation becomes severe a major repair project is announced—often accompanied by extensive publicity to show how concerned the agency is.

A surprising trend has emerged wherein necessary repair works are delayed under the pretext of pending administrative approvals. In reality, larger potholes can be repaired immediately using interlocking tiles. This method is significantly simpler, faster, and more economical compared to conventional repair techniques. Many other parts of the country have successfully adopted this practice. When laid on a concrete base, these tiles can be installed swiftly, allowing roads to be opened to traffic almost immediately, even NHAI is using this. The civic bodies in capital already possess ample stocks of both new and used tiles.

It is therefore requested that PWD, MCD, DCB, and DDA be advised to adopt the use of interlocking tiles as a practical and effective method for repairing deep potholes.
