PMO

Grievance: The low turnout of voters is an alarming sign for the growth of any democracy. It is against the basics of a system to empower those who don’t vote would play the role of king maker. As of now the Government has not taken any concrete step to improve the ratio.

Suggested solution: We may initiate a process to suggest people that voting is not only a right but also a duty to be performed diligently. When voting day is declared as a paid holiday, the citizen is under an obligation to cast vote both legally & morally.

To spread the message we may begin with following easy steps:

1.       Following category of citizens may be advised to submit a voting status by them and all family members staying with them or shown as dependent.

a.       All Central/State Government employees

b.       Employees of autonomous bodies, PSU & municipalities

c.       All other citizens falling within the category of public servants,

d.       Employees of NGOs getting grant from the Government

e.       Employees of big cap & mid cap listed corporates.

2.       Always keep voting day either Saturday or Sunday. In case of any day it makes long weekend and people flee to tourist places.

3.       Devise some mechanism allowing people to cast vote for more than one day, as adopted in some other countries.

4.       Devise some system enabling outstation people to cast vote.

The above initial thought may be considered and further explored till there is a legal frame work in place for mandatory voting.
