A few months back in response to a call by a Pakistaani terrorist to derail the trains in India, many radical sleeper cell workers got activated and several incidents were noticed where objects were found placed on railway track with the ulterior motive of derailing the trains. However, with the grace of God no major incident happened.
In many such cases involvement of children was found. Brain washed teenaged children were engaged to collect nearby stones and place them on the railway track. These stones are capable of inflicting substantial damage to train body.
I am sure railway must have explored some ways to tackle such anti national acts, I am just forwarding my thoughts.
On looking at a railway locomotive we find many of them have a frontal shield (photo enclosed). This shield has some gap with the track. If we could reduce this gap to minimum possible say 5mm, this can effectively throw away such stones and other smaller objects placed on track before they could come in contact with wheels, thereby improving some safety measure. Or some similar kind of other wheel protector may be designed.
