Attached is a photograph depicting a common
issue faced by pedestrians in Delhi. These obstructive boards, spanning the
width of footpaths, are not an isolated occurrence but a prevalent problem
across many locations in the city. Despite numerous efforts, including
approximately 50 such reports sent to the Public Works Department (PWD) over
the past decade, the response remains inadequate. While officials occasionally
address specific instances, the problem persists as a systemic issue.
It's imperative to recognize that obstructing
footpaths with low-height boards is not only careless but also illegal,
blatantly disregarding established regulations. The repeated inaction raises
serious questions about the efficacy of PWD's approach and the diligence of
field staff. Why haven't PWD engineers, renowned for their expertise, applied
simple common sense to address this matter? The absence of proactive measures raises
the question: where is the accountability within the department? It is actually
ridicules that PWD spends crores on construction of footpaths - Just to block
them?
A comprehensive inspection of Delhi's
footpaths is urgently needed, followed by the immediate removal of all
obstructions. It's time for decisive action to prioritize pedestrian safety and
uphold the integrity of public spaces."
