Dear Gupta ji and other friends : After reading your email, I am reminded of an incidence that happened with me 13/14 years ago, when my son was studying in DAV Centenary Public School, Mianwali Nagar. The school authorities started harassing me with their fleecing tactics almost every second month with the purpose of extracting more and more money in the name of frequent Picnics, Kavi Sammelans, school fete etc. I frankly told them that I will not give even a single rupee except for picnics, but also pointed out that the charges demanded were certainly very much on the higher side. The In-charge of the School for Cultural activities told me to talk to the Principal, Mr. S.C. Anand. I had a detailed discussion with him and expressed my views that my son should not be harassed for not bringing the money as demanded by them. Surprisingly, the Principal told me that we know that the mother of the child is also working then I should not hesitate to shell out more and more money to them. I again tried to reason with him that she is not working for paying your unreasonable demands. Secondly, if she is working, our child has to suffer, as after returning from school, he has to stay in a Day Care Centre till evening and returns home by 7.00 PM only. But the greedy principal refused to see my points, rather threatened me that if I did not pay them (Rs. 500/- at that time for the Kavi Sammmelan) my son shall not be allowed to sit in the final exams. Please also note that at that time, my son was just in 2nd or 3rd Class.
The illogical and threatening argument of the Principal made my head hot and I also threatened him to dare to do what he plans for me, and I shall take action on him according to law. I also told him that the earlier, I was planning to admit my second child - a daughter as well in your school, but now I have changed my mind. Of course, my son was allowed to appear in the final exam, but they gave him poor marks in the final result.
Then, next year I withdrew my son from that school and got him admitted in another school, and then again the principal told me that I should donate his security deposit to the school, which I frankly refused. But, the stubborn Principal refused to pay me the security. Then, I lodged a complaint with MRTP Commission and highlighted the whole episode as to how that school fleeces the parents in the name of fetes, kavi sammelans and frequent picnics etc. MRTP Commission issued a notice to them terming their activities as : "unfair trade practices aimed at fleecing the parents" and told them to reply within 7 days. Then, the principal got scared, he approached me thru some one else who knew me as well and requested me to withdraw my complaint earlier made to MRTPC. But, I frankly declined with a wording that I had to resort to this route just to teach him a lesson, as he was constantly harassing the poor parents.
To give reply to the MRTPC's notice, he had to take services of an advocate who took Rs. 5000/- as his fees and the management deducted this money from the Principal's salary. Of course, my security deposit (Rs. 1000/- at that time) was also refunded to me within a week.
All that, I would like to tell others, is that please do not fall a prey to their fleecing tactics, firstly frankly inform the school authorities that you are not going to pay anything more than their legal charges etc. and that they should not harass them or their child. And if the school still continues to play foul with you, take some legal action against them.
