Reg: T-point infrastructure on roads.

Recently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the installation of indicator structures at road splits for enhanced visibility to vehicles, aligning with European practices. These structures boast flexibility and a certain degree of shock absorption capability in case of vehicle collisions. However, they come at a high cost and demand considerable maintenance efforts. While these structures might thrive in Western countries due to their organized and efficient maintenance teams, the reality in India poses challenges. A recent example near Ambience Mall illustrates this, where a newly installed structure was damaged within a day, and now lying as it is.

Alternatively, the Gurugram Municipality offers a simpler yet effective solution, as depicted in the attached photo. By deploying two columns of colorful, repurposed tires to mark road splits, they achieve similar objectives in a more cost-effective manner, perfectly suited to local conditions. The impact-absorbing capacity of tires surpasses that of iron structures. Depending upon the availability of space the pack can be designed for each T point/split. The colour combination of tires is attractive & gives sharp visibility. Given the abundance of old tires available at almost no cost, maintenance and replacement become significantly easier and cheaper. Furthermore, attracting sponsorship from tire manufacturers for such a community-oriented initiative seems possible.

NHAI could consider adopting Gurugram Municipality's approach to optimize resource utilization effectively. By replicating this successful strategy, NHAI can not only reduce costs but also enhance safety and sustainability along the nation's highways.
