Dear Fellow Members,
- Maybe in Sept 2013 or earlier SDMC had allocated funds for installation of Semi High Mast Lights (12 Meters) in DDA and CGHS societies. Soon after Election Code of conduct was enforced so only a few societies of Dwarka Sub-City could get these lights in their premises. Now, remaining CGHS societies are also also being allotted with one such light and the authorities would require consent of CGHS management before installation of the same.
- Sometimes it feel strange that the same corporation was unable to order for the repair of street lights already installed in front of societies. It also couldn't provide minimal lighting in the deserted back lanes or parks behind most of the societies. Now maybe more than 2 Lakhs have been sanctioned for each society to have this huge pillar of steel. Above that another 3 - 4 Lakhs annually are estimated to be spent on maintenance of all Mast lights installed in an MCD Ward say Matiala.
However, I would be glad to know the view of the fellow members who have got these Semi-High mast lights of 12 Meters installed in their premises. Request you to please provide your opinion so that other societies may decide on whether to have the same installed or not.
- In my personal opinion these lights should get installed at traffic intersections / parks / markets but not in group housing societies. As most of societies already have so many energy saving CFL’s and we should strive towards reduction in Electricity Consumption not increasing it by having High Mast lights.
I could think of following Pros and Cons of having these mast lights; members can suggest more points: -Pros
- Better Illumination in society premises, park and street in front or rear of the society. Existing CFL / street lights can be switched off. Also, no need of installing halogens whenever there is some celebration / gathering in the park.
- SDMC is distributing something in free so we should not refuse it even though we don’t really want it.
- High power consumption of this lights would get compensated by the promised of government to reduce power bills by 50%.
Cons
- These high capacity lights would light up the flats at night and the resident’s may have to put up extra thick / dark curtains to get proper sleep at night.
- We teach Energy Conservation to our kids and still want to consume more power.
- Higher electricity consumption should be avoided at any cost. A populist promise of the upcoming govt. of bill reduction must not lead to wasteful power consumption.
Request all to provide their opinion / views [and votes :-) in favor or against "High Mast Lights in CGHS Societies" as its the time of referendums, today we got a govt in our city after a sort of referendum].

HiOne thing is i have seen on few societies front gates, 2 bulbs are lighting the front of gate but rest two are lightng the top of tree which is sheer wastage..Timely operation as suggested by Sanjeev is good. Turn 1 bulb off after certain time.regardsKrishna

(I) The installation location is important, the area covered should be
outside lanes as well,
(ii) There can be 2 on-off switches to cover lights e.g. half of
alternate lights may be switched off at 11 pm to save electricity,
(iii) Since maintenance is not cheap, if society feels that this is
not required they should refuse it, one should not accept it only
because it is coming free.
(iv) It may not be easy to switch off the lights fixed in public
street to avoid duplication, payment for which is also being made by
different agencies.
