Grievance: It’s not long back when the covid-19 pandemic had shaken every human being on the earth. Administration went through tough times and suddenly life seemed to have come to a halt. Even the best prepared and most advanced nations suffered a lot from this sudden tragedy. The worth of passing through any turmoil lies in the experience one gains to be ready to fight similar disasters in future. We must learn lesson from it and be prepared with infrastructure suitable to face recurrence of such kind of emergencies in future.

The covid-19 essentially taught us TOUCH theory, as to how a simple touch to anything can become extremely hazardous and a potential disease spreader.

It was expected that we would develop and come-up with touch less models of public utilities and promote touch-less culture, but practically no such examples are seen anywhere. It seems we have forgotten the tragedy very fast and would pass-though the same difficulties in case of recurrence.

My Opinion: In this regard it is opined that we must come out with touch less wash basin models in public toilets where at least tap can be operated with foot or with some other easy to operate robust technology suitable for Indian conditions. Toilet can prove to be most deadly disease spreader, the touch less operation of wash-basin and entry/exit door can prove to be a strong disconnect. Examples may be set up by running a pilot project at all airports and railway stations.

Dear Sir,

I appreciate your acknowledgment of the issue.

However, I differ from your observation regarding partial development of covid appropriate infrastructure.

At non of the airports you would find any washroom door operated in a hands-free manner.  Even the hands-free taps are not there at most of airports. Only the main entrance of the airport is hands-free. I have nowhere observed any foot-operated taps in public toilets. Even if they exist, such a minuscule presence would not make any difference. We need a technique that is cheaper & robust. The censor-based taps are too costly and require high maintenance, not suitable for Indian conditions.

Someone would need to take the onus of developing & spreading the technique. Until this requirement is incorporated in any rules, procedures or advisory nothing is going to happen. So you are requested to take appropriate action to see how this may be added to the building code as well into the rail coach manufacturing process.

Please acknowledge.

Regards,

Sanjeev

Sir,

This has reference to the Grievance No. DOURD/E/2023/0008926 dated 07.07.2023 on the subject mentioned above. The application has been transferred/directed to Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC), an autonomous organization under Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, GoI, for reply.

Your observation about importance of touch less models of public utility after COVID-19 pandemic, is highly appreciated.

You will appreciate that now a day at prominent airports, automatic doors, automatic wash basin, and entry through mobile based QR codes are observed. Further, wash basin models operated with foot are also observed in many public building toilets.

However, there is definite need of wide spread use of available touch less technologies, and further identification, encouragement & adoption of such technologies on a continuous basis.

For BMTPC
