BEWARE OF FRADUS BY PLACEMENT AGENCIES PROVIDING MAIDS

M K Gupta, Free Lancer

BEWARE of placement agencies providing domestic helps as many agencies are indulging in frauds to cheat the clients.  Modus Operendi, give advertisement in newspapers for providing domestic servants, give mobile number only, on demand from the prospective clients, reach at their houses at late night say around 11.00 p.m..  leave the servant/ maid at the client House, charge full year Commission on the spot in advance, do not give photo of servant immediately by putting the onus of this on the clients advising him to initiate action of police verification only after the servant is settled.  These servants work most diligently and try to win the faith of their employers and servant suddenly disappears, if have the chance, after cash or other costlier but small items like gold, mobile, watch etc.  Recently, there was a case wherein a newly recruited maid abducted an 18-months-old-boy named Ishaan and was recovered from Faridabad and four persons were arrested.

On 7.5.2011, a person named Deepak of Anjali Placement Agency, B-223, Mangol Puri Road, Nangloi brought a maid servant at about 11.00 p.m. instead of 9.00 p.m. as promised for this.  The name of the maid was told Joshna Roy of Jalpai Gudi of West Bengal and charged Rs. 20,000/- as year commission for one year.   The form given by him is without the photograph of maid.  He even said that we should not go for police verification for at least five days and first, the maid should feel settled and thereafter only should submit the form to police for verification but we failed to get the hint.

Photo of maid

I went for her photograph to Sam’s Image Studio (previously known as Moon Image) near wine shop at Sector VI market, Dwarka for her photograph and when I was returning with her on my motor cycle, after covering some distance, I felt that the maid is not on the rear seat and when I checked, she was really not on the bike meaning thereby ran away taking advantage of traffic jam by jumping from the seat.

I first thought that she might have fallen from the bike somewhere on the way while returning from the market but could not find her anywhere. In the meantime, I informed my son and daughter in law and all of us searched her for about an hour and at last, phoned on 8750005518 to the person to who we requested to provide the maid.  He told that maid has reached NOIDA somehow and an autowala has informed him on phone that he is brining her back to his office at Nangloi.  When we asked the phone number of the Autodriver, he said that he will be calling back within five minutes. After waiting for about five minutes, we called many times on his mobile but he did not pick up the phone. When we told him that we are going to police station for lodging a complaint, he said to wait and he will come shortly.

The name of the placement agency mentioned on the letterhead is Anjali Placement Service (Regd. No. 753/2010), B-223, Mangolpuri Road, Nangloi, New Delhi. (Mobile 8750005518). This agency was referred by another persons whose number is 8800569846 (name not known). No landline number is mentioned on the letter-head. These contact were taken by my daughter in law from another person of so called Sangeeta Placement Agency and might be from some one else also who read an advt. in the newspaper. When tried to contact on these number, the message is not reachable or off.

When we checked the bag of the maid after she ran, we found that all her wearing are new and this fact is indicative of the she has also perpetrated such frauds with others also by leaving her clothes at the home of her employers and purchased new clothes for the new hunt.

Now, the maid and the so-called representative may be or will be looking for another prey for hunting.  I have submitted a complaint to the Sector 9 police station under DD No. 49A at 11.35 p.m. requesting to lodge an FIR.

I am also ashamed on my folly or the carelessness of members of my family who in the zeal of a servant did not exercise proper care.

I will be sending copy of this mail to DCP- West Delhi etc after the photo of absconding servant is scanned.

Dear Mr. Gupta,

I am sorry to hear about your loss. In fact this is a well organised racket and going on for so long. worst part is when you complain to police they will make you feel guilty of lodging a police complaint as if you yourself are responsible for this state of affair.

I am enclosing copy of Newspaper article (HT dated 27/02/2011) this is about my experience on the same issue, it is identical to your incident.

In all of these cases police has patent reply that Mobile connections are procured on fake documents and hence they will be unable to do much in the case.

After the recent Ishaan kidnapping case I had written to Commissioner of Police as well as to Jt. Commr. Crime on the issue, we must insist on accountability of the person handing over the mobile connection to end user to ensure that person collecting the connection is same as photograph/ documents submitted.

I am aware that mobile companies were trying to avoid their sales teams responsibilities in ensuring proper documentation identity proof just to boost the number of connection sold, but in the process giving rise to criminals. We have to raise our voice and not let few of telecom operators holding country to ransom. (Mumbai 26/11 terrorists also used mobile connections procured on fake document).

Warm regards

Sudhir Kalra

Dear Mr. Kalara, Thanks for your concern.

In addition to the two mobile numbers, the photo of maid is also there and two addresses also.  Second address of another placement agency is Sangeet Placement, K-418, Buddh Vihar, Rohini.  At least, if the placement persons have fleeced, at least some neighbourers can give some clue about them.  Even after this incident,

I thank to God that this unfortunate incident has happed next day of employing the maid  If  the same maid would have been retained for some more days, she may prove more dangerious to all of us.

The photo of maid who ran away can be cireculated so that other potential clients may not be fleeced and duped.

Mr. Gupta,

My experience says that even the addresses given on letterhead/visiting cards would be fake. (It was so in my case) as regards photo of maid, yes that could be useful, only if it is published and public is called to identify her. (which again won't be done as police takes these as petty crime and do not want to add to their figures. ( you keep your eyes shut and claim Aall is well).

If possible circulate the picture online maybe you can save few more people from getting conned.

Yes, provided two addresses instead of one. One address belongs to the person who advtd in paper and given address of Budh Vihar, Delhi.
Now going to meet IO at Police Station, Sector 9 so that others are not trapped in the net by the plotters.

Dear All,

I have another story, which happened 4 years ago. One of my ex-colleague
who was living in Mayur Vihar took one maid servant from a placement agency
(name not known) and after 3 days the maid ran away with some jewels and
cash. My friend came to know about it after 4 hours when his wife reached
home. He immediately called the placement agency and told him what has
happened and said he is going to lodge a police complaint. The agent
immediately told him, "You are the culprit. You have molested the girl and
might have even killed her ... Now you should find her and hand-over to me
else I will give a complaint to the police!!!" Then my colleague did not
want to pursue the matter and left it !!!

There was another case where they got a servant from their native and after
a month one fine morning the girl insisted on going back to the village in
Tamil Nadu. Our friend booked the train ticket and just by chance they
wanted to check her bag ... and when they opened it they found some of
their jewels inside it!!!

I always tell my friends not to ever have a full-time servant at home. It
is very dangerous and not worth it. I always tell them not to leave the
servant with the kids alone and go out. My personal opinion is that when we
can't even take care of our own children what else are we going to achieve
in life!

Thank you Mr Sudhir Kalara,
I have been reading this topic for the last week or so, What ever you have mention it need immediate action.
Since it not a small matter to be ignored or to give low priority by the Delhi Police. I suggest the CP be requested to issue a letter to all concerned to find the offices of Placement agencies providing domestic helps/maid and check their registration, permit etc if not found satisfactory, the legal proceeding by the area SHO be at once drawn.

DCP of the area must get monthly report from SHO to this effect.I hope some thing of this nature will reduce the crimes where agents earn quick money without any responsibility.

I am one of the resident having house in Dwarka but occasionally visit my house as it is being rebuilt now.

With best wishes please keep doing your best for better cause of society.

I too found these kind of fleecing earlier and even put some people at least behind bars for few days some year back after persistent follow up.
Then there are many friends reported similar news of maid running away.
Main problem we most of the couples are working and direly wait for a help, they fleece us the disadvantage we have

No. 1 Always take RECORDS including Photos, Videos
2. The RWA/CGHS Must have Gate CCTV
3. Instead of Police Verification Mere standard format of Servant Verifiation we shared must be aleast be prepared and kept on reocrd.

Hi all

Its a complex topic. Nobody wants a full time maid etc but its a
necessity if both parents are working.. And its too scary to even
think of incidents of leaving your kids with such maids..

I feel solution is good security in the society so that maid can't go
out on their own atleast with the kid of the owner.. Guard must keep
the number of the landlord and call him immediately if maid is going
out and landlord is not aware.. But at end, the same problem. Who will
make rules for guard when MC is busy in just collecting as much money
as they can during their tenure. Somehow, I feel they are just small
level politician who want to loot as much as they can before next
term..

Best solution is live with big family if possible, have close and
friendly relations with neighbors so that maid is also aware its not
only parents but whole bunch of people who know who is who..

Dear All
Unless the placement agency can produce the police verification of
the concerned candidate
it is a clear indication of the malafide intentions.of the placement
agency and should not be entertained
under any circumstances

Dear Freinds,

The police verification of maid is secondary issue, primary issue is verification of the placement agency itself. As most of these crimes is in connivance with so called placement agency, as the agency owners are the kingpin of all these rackets and maids are small fries.

Invaribly it will be the owners who will claim to have maid verified and recommended by previous employers but they never talk about their own bonafides, we get into their trap as we are desperate to get maids and overlook basic precautions which a prudent person should take.

I have come across posters of a placement agency pasted all across the city, it is operating out of somewhere in Uttam Nagar, after talking to them over the phone it became very obvious that it is a con job and they are going to fleece gullible people. Otherwise how is it possible for a small time agency providing maids to plaster across the city their pamphlets.

It is operating on the pattern of freindship club racket which was busted yesterday at Janakpuri. The reason I am mentioning about a particular agency is due to close proximity with your location and I am sure many of your members till now would have been fooled by them.

Only solution to this menace is to bring pressure on police to compulsorily verify all such placement agencies, before allowing them to operate.

Another way they fool people is by claiming (Regd.) after their name!

Registered by whom? where ? under which law?

I had the opportunity of checking one so called registeration certificate, which was nothing but a sham piece of registeration of name on a Rs.10 stamp paper notarised by notary, it means nothing and costs all of Rs. 100/- to get it, again without any trailing evidence in terms of any proof of identity.

So beware.
