Just trying to touch base and see what everybody's up to these days.
I'm in LA (been here since Nov.) and am doing a part-time internship
at Zoic (unpaid) and working the front desk at Hydraulx (paid).
Unfortunately, b/c of the writers strike there isn't much to do at
Zoic since they mostly do VFX for episodic TV (they are supposedly the
ILM of TV land) and interns usually drive around picking up and
dropping off tapes. They are letting me help with the dynamics for a
commercial they're doing which is a start. Hydraulx is run by the
Brothers Strause and does VFX for film and the occasional music video.
Here I just answer the phones and talk smack to the artists all day.
Although this AM a VFX supe walked by and said he would give me
something to do if I get bored, so the outlook seems good.

go Kim go!!!!!

Zoic IS one of the big shots for episodic TV....Cool working the
phones for Hydraulx....it's paid, and you're in the building.....great
that a vfx supe wants to give you some stuff to do too!!!

Leseee....I just finished a 4 month stint (Oct-Jan) at CafeFX in Santa
Maria doing Matchmove.....learned a brand new software
package....Syntheyes.....which is CHEAP! so I can buy it and maybe
pick up some freelance Matchmove work on the side.
While I was at Cafe, I got to work on 4 shows, Nim's Island, a HBO
miniseries about John Adams, M. Night Shaymalongabong's next
opus....The Happening and then also some 911 work for a show that I
don't know if I'm allowed to talk about.....but the first line of this
e-mail might be a hint to someone who is a fan of the original work.

I've been off for two weeks, and took a quick trip with some family
to China, but am now back and in the process of recutting my reel and
looking for work. If any of y'all hear about some matchmoving
opportunities, I'd appreciate if ya send em my way =)

I hope things are treating everyone else well!!!

Hey Kiddos,

I'm back at the Army game in good ol' Emeryville. I'm their Technical
Artist and Associate Producer (helping keep the art team and animators
on track!). Been doing that since...last May (2007). Lots of fun,
lots to do, it's definitely keeping me busy. Good idea pinging
everyone, hopefully others will reply and we can get a fix on
folks ;-).

Hello Everys Bodies!
Things are well here, although its been a real rollercoaster ride!
After Perpetual, I spent a while with a company called Unemployment.
After about 4 months, a cellphone-content-generating company called
Emdigo offered me a meagerly better offer (VERY meager). I worked
there for about 6 months, before I was picked up by Secret Level, a
game studio in SF. I originally signed on for about a 3 month
contract, but the seemed not to hate me, and extended my contract
until June of this year (after which point, I'm hoping they might hire
me on full time). I'm currently animating on the next-gen remake of
Golden Axe. It's been really fun, and I work with an amazing team!

I miss you guys! Let's have a party! Nikki and I'll host if theres
enough interest, although since we have no alcohol, I know we're not
the party-venue of choice ;)

Well lets see...after graduation I came back to Nebraska, had the
worst summer of my life, good friend got killed in a car accident, got
thrown in jail and put on probation, my dad got diagnosed with cancer,
and that was just in the first 2 months. After I got off probation,
the second summer after graduation, I had surgery on my shoulder so I
couldn't use my left arm (I'm left handed) for about 6 months, so that
was pretty exciting. Now I'm fully recovered and working at a graphic
design company that does a bunch of logos and decals for Nascar and
Sprint Cars, while planning a move to Arizona in the summer.

That's awful, Ryan! I'm so sorry about all of that! Is your dad in
treatment? A good friend of mine growing up just got diagnosed with
breast cancer. She's moving to Reno for treatment, so we'll see what
happens! Our thoughts (and in Kim's and my case, prayers) are with
you, bro!

Good luck with the graphic design stuff, that sounds awesome!

That's fucked up Ryan!  But it sounds like things are going a little better now.  If you move to Arizona you'll be a little closer and maybe you can visit.  It would be cool to see everyone again.

Thanks Kim for getting this going.  It's cool to hear what everyone is up to.  Have you looked up Hankel down in L.A. yet?

I'm still up in the Bay area waiting on getting some work.  Mia and I are going to have a baby in May.  It's a boy!  Other than that not much going on.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Hey Everyone,

I'm glad to hear things are working out for you in LA Kim. Keep it up
and eventually you'll land the position you really want!

I'm sorry to hear about your string of bad luck Ryan. Good luck in
Arizona! I hope things turn out better for you there.

I'm working along side Brandon at Army Game Project in Emeryville as a
3D modeler and texture artist... hoping they hire Julian soon so we
can strengthen our class 42 presence. About half of the team is from
Expression and the other half is from either SCAD in Georgia or
somewhere in the south. Recently I've been busy making level assets
but soon I may start doing some environment work and dressing up some
game levels. We will see.

I hope everyone is well.

Hi All,

It's great to hear from everyone. I'm really impressed with the
progress you've made in your careers. Ryan, sorry to hear the bad
news. I don't know if my update is very relevant or useful for anyone,
but I thought I'd let you guys know what's up just the same. I'm
working at UC, Santa Cruz as a Programmer/Analyst. I love living and
working in Santa Cruz, but I miss doing the visual arts stuff so I'm
about to start taking classes again in my spare time for fun and a
social outlet.

It would be great to see you all again sometime,

Hey All!!!

First and foremost, congratulations to you, Julian, on the new
addition to your family!!! You must be so excited!

It is so good to hear from all of you, and I am glad that everyone is
doing well (or in your case, Ryan, better!)!

As for me, since graduating, I have had an interesting journey. I
went back to work for Kaiser Permanente's Recruitment Department a
couple months after graduating, and worked as a floater (I know that
sounds gross, but it accurately describes the job) for my old
Recruitment boss. It was supposed to be part time so I could continue
working on my reel and job search, but it was really a full time job...
with fewer hours to do the work. Needless to say, I got tired of not
having time to work on my true career goals, so I quit last June,
after 11 months, and I have been looking for work in the film or
gaming industries ever since. I have applied for practically anything
and everything, but so far, I have had two nibbles, but no bites. I
haven't given up, but I have recently had to extend my job search to
other areas outside of my career focus. Eight months without work
does have certain negative side effects!

As for my externship, after the threat of being dropped from
Ex'pression for not completing my externship hours, I was able to find
a couple of non-paying small projects to fill the Ex'pression
requirement, and I received my degree last May.

Please do keep us updated as events in your lives evolve, and I will
do the same! BTW, I'm not sure if everyone heard, but I have changed
my personal email address, which is now Im1...@gmail.com . Thanks,
Kim, for getting this started!

All the best,

Sam

Hey all!
So this is just a quick update, but I've been accepted into the
Animation Mentor program. I'll be starting June 30th! Wish me luck!

Oh, and check out the Iron Man trailer:

http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/iron-man/iron-man-video-premiere/1195411

This is actually the video that plays on the front menu of the game if
you don't press start. There's only one animation on here of mine
(second to last shot, giant robot lands heavily with Iron Man in the
foreground). I worked on Iron Man for about 3 weeks at the beginning
of this year. It's a pretty cool project, you should go rent it when
it comes out!

Wow Ryan, I'm sorry your summer has been so tough. I will definitely
pray for your Dad. Keep us updated on how he is doing.

Julian--I'm so excited for you and Mia!!! Do you know if its a boy or
girl yet? Have you picked out a name?

Congrats Trav! I'm sure you'll do awesome at Animation Mentor.

Okay, here's my latest. I finished up my internship at Zoic and got
offered jobs at both Zoic and Hydraulx. I ended up choosing Hydraulx,
and in about two weeks I will transition out of my front desk role and
begin training to be their 3D coordinator. The eventual plan is for me
to take over for the current coordinator. It's a cool position b/c you
get to coordinate the shots across all the movies instead of working
on just one, and since the coordinator assigns the shots to the
artists, I can always assign myself one now and then so I'm not just
stuck doing admin stuff all day. Plus, we're on the Promenade in
Santa Monica which makes the parking suck but the perks terrific.

Had lunch with the Hankels in Sept before I moved down here and coffee
with Slater a few weeks ago. Other than that I've been by my lonesome
so don't forget to ping me if any of you come to town.

Whooooo! Congrats on the job Kim! Two offers, not a bad deal!
Sounds like you're going to have some major influence over there at
Hydraulx! That's so great!

So since Secret Level did the Iron Man game, we got a pre-screening of
the movie! Holy goodness, go see it when it comes out! It's not
good, it's GREAT! Hands down the best superhero movie to date!
Definitely worth seeing in theaters as opposed to waiting. I hope
this is an indication of a better summer of movies than last year.
Between Pirates and Transformers, I don't think I've ever been so
disappointed in the lost potential of a movie lineup. This summer
should be great tho! We've got Iron Man (great), The Dark Knight
(can't wait!), Indiana Jones (Should be great, although... Episodes
1-3, that's all I'm saying...), and, of course, WALLe, which will blow
minds (no I haven't seen it, I just feel it, in my heart... Okay, I'll
have to hold off on these cheesy Iron Man references until you've seen
it, I suppose).

Also, speaking of Iron Man, our game is coming out soon! I just found
this trailer we made specifically for the Comic Con:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFYTVR3jwQM

Weirdly, this is a much better trailer than the one we released
online, and it never made the rounds. I'm partial tho, as it has more
of my shots on it :) Here's a shot list if you want to waste 5 mins
of your life:

-Directly after the Fighter Jet shot, there's a quick slow-to-turning
shot of Iron Man with his air break wings out.
-(I think the shot directly following this of Iron Man flying down
into the camera is mine, but if so, they tweaked the timing to look
cartoony... BOOOOO!)
-Directly after he takes out a helicopter with his pulse blastin'
chest, there's a shot where he does a barrel roll.
-Directly after it says "In Air or On the Ground", this is a sequence
of the final boss battle Cinematic I did.
-Directly after it says "You are a One Man Army", when he flies past
the camera, this is another clip from a Cinematic I did.

Does anyone have a shot list for Scott's work on Chipmunks? I'd love
to see his big-screen debut stuff!

And SOMEBODY make Julian announce his new big gig. I don't want to
blow it for him by saying it myself, but he's got a good job! Ask
him!
