Title: Program Assistant, Policy and Outreach

Location: Vancouver, BC

Status: Volunteer internship, fall 2012, 21 hours/week, minimum 3 months

Reporting: Miriam Palacios, Regional Outreach Officer

Purpose: Working closely with members of Oxfam Canada’s Policy and Outreach Team, the intern will provide assistance to Oxfam Canada in its regional public engagement, campaigning and community events, supporting communications with our membership and engaging Oxfam community- and campus-based volunteer groups.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn and educate others about women’s rights, gender justice and food justice;
  • Provide leadership to, train and coordinate volunteers for program activities;
  • Assist with event planning, coordination;
  • Prepare training resources and materials for Oxfam volunteers and fundraisers;
  • Assist with the development of public education and fundraising tools, displays and materials;
  • Assist with communications to Oxfam community based groups and university campus-based clubs;
  • Respond to public inquiries;
  • Support use of online tools including event postings and volunteer opportunities using Twitter, Facebook, and various other electronic platforms;
  • Some administrative duties as required.

 

Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and excellent written communication skills, fluency in French an asset;
  • Commitment to women’s rights and gender equality
  • Post secondary studies in international development, environmental studies, women’s studies, or a similar field;
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as effectively in a team setting;
  • Demonstrated public education and volunteer coordination (recruitment, motivation, coordination and retention) experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in coalitions, and seek out and build strategic relationships as required.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills;
  • Strong commitment and interest in social justice, women’s rights and eradication of poverty;
  • Must have the ability to accommodate irregular work hours and have strong time management and organizational skills.
