Position:        Communications Specialist
Term:             Full-time, 1-year term
Reports to:    Director, Refugee 613

Do you have what we need?

You are an outstanding writer and skilled communications professional. You have a sharp, organized mind, a passion for social justice and a can-do attitude. You are looking for a chance to grow professionally and build your network while dedicating your skills to building our community.

We are a small, dynamic project helping Ottawa do the best job it can to welcome and integrate refugees, regardless of category or country of origin. We are looking to add a communications specialist to our close-knit team, someone who knows the difference between active and passive voice, is equally at ease tweeting or strategizing, and loves storytelling for its power to make the world a better place.

About Refugee 613:

Refugee 613 is a short-term project housed at OCISO and created by a network of citizens, settlement agencies, sponsorship groups and community partners working to provide refugees with the building blocks of successful integration: a warm welcome and access to key services, opportunities and support. An independent, non-partisan, grassroots effort, we do not provide frontline services, we support those who do by providing information, connection and inspiration.

About OCISO:

OCISO supports immigrants through the journey of making Canada their home by providing creative and responsive programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, by building community through mutual respect and partnerships, and by fostering healthy and inclusive spaces for open dialogue and healing.

Position Summary:

The Refugee 613 Communications Specialist is a new position created to support the project’s internal and external communications goals. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of developing and implementing communications strategies to strengthen our relationship with key audiences, maximize the flow of information between partners and facilitate Refugee 613’s growing role in refugee advocacy.

  • Coordinate media relations as needed, including planning media launches, drafting press releases and coordinating interviews
  • Represent Refugee 613 to the highest standard and maintain excellent working relationships with the general public, partners and funders
  • Demonstrating a commitment to OCISO’s culture of respect and the anti-racism/anti-oppression policy within the work environment and in the community

  • Post-secondary education in a discipline relevant to communications, journalism or public relations
