Description

Job Overview

The goal of IDRC’s Employment and Growth Program is to support research that contributes to job creation in developing countries, particularly for women and youth. Our current portfolio of projects focuses on women’s economic empowerment, youth employment, entrepreneurship and leveraging collaboration between public and private sectors.

As the Program Management Officer, working closely with the Program Leader, you will contribute to the development and operation of the Program. This includes playing a key coordination role to produce, communicate and disseminate program information in support of program management. Your principal responsibilities will include information management, research support, program coordination, monitoring and evaluation, communications and network development, and liaising with key internal and external constituents. 

Candidate Profile

Education

  • Master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline such as international development, public administration, international relations, political science or political economy.

Experience

Position requires one to three years of relevant work experience, which includes: 

  • coordinating projects, conferences and meetings;
  • monitoring and compiling research results;
  • communicating research, for public and policy audiences;
  • preparing reports and briefing notes as well as minute taking;
  • building and maintaining partnerships; and
  • undertaking independent research.

Experience using data analysis software and managing a database and website, and working in developing regions are assets.   

Language

  • Bilingual (English/French) position at an intermediate level

Knowledge

  • Understanding of employment and growth issues and challenges in the developing world
  • Knowledge of project management principles
  • Knowledge of research methodology
  • Understanding of research to policy linkages
  • Familiarity with evaluation methods is an asset

Competencies

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and writing skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team with competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Superior planning, organizing, coordinating and team work skills
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision
  • Ability to perform research-related tasks (e.g. library and web research, analysis and synthesis of documents, writing and editing) and to use a wide range of research methods (e.g. quantitative and qualitative data collection analysis)
  • Sound MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet, website management and information management skills including comfort with specialized information management software
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to individual, gender and cultural differences

IDRC’s Governance and Justice Program funds research that addresses development challenges posed by insecurity, injustice, and the abuse of power. We support evidence-based research that helps citizens and public authorities address the sources of violent conflict, organized crime, and poor governance in a gender sensitive manner. The result is a better understanding of how institutions and practices can be made more effective and accountable to the populations they serve.
