Gabriel Caine (James Woods), a con man, is released from prison in Winfield, Georgia and straight away gets to function on his subsequent scam. Caine and his companion, Fitz (Oliver Platt), travel to a modest town not far in the prison: Diggstown, a city obsessed with boxing.

A mean-spirited man named John Gillon (Bruce Dern) owns pretty much all of Diggstown. He’s feared by quite a few but additionally respected since he was the former manager of Diggstown’s pride and joy, the once-famous boxer Charles Macom Diggs, the man for whom the town is named.

Upon hearing a remark that Diggs after knocked out 5 fighters in a single day, Fitz “drunkenly” says he knows of a fighter who could knock out any ten in one particular day: Honey Roy Palmer. Gillon tries to make the most of the circumstance and bets Fitz $100,000 that nobody man can greatest ten Diggstown boxers in a single day. Caine swiftly volunteers to finance Fitz’s bet along with the con is on.

Caine seeks out an old buddy, Palmer (Louis Gossett Jr.), who’s now a 48-year-old YMCA supervisor. Following some initial reluctance, Palmer agrees to participate and begins to train for the fight. Caine and Gillon agree to different situations from the bet, with “one day” getting 24 complete hours and “Diggstown fighters” having the ability to come from any surrounding region of Olivair County. A loan shark backs Caine’s bet, with all the understanding that his well being and welfare will likely be riding around the outcome.

Caine discovers that Gillon’s treachery (and his bank account) goes deeper than Diggstown individuals know. As his manager, Gillon drugged Diggs through a fight to ensure that Gillon could gather around the opponent’s extended odds. Diggs suffered irreversible brain harm consequently.

With enable from his prison buddy Wolf’s sister (Heather Graham), it’s discovered that Gillon has greater than $1.five million in assets. Caine tricks him into risking all of it. Now it truly is as much as Honey Roy Palmer to defeat all ten of Diggstown’s males.

They commence with:

— Buck Holland, who’s played by former Heavyweight Boxing Contender Rocky Pepeli who puts up a superb fight, Palmer barely beats him.

— Slim Busby, who like his brother, Hambone, has been bribed by Caine to take a dive.

— Billy Hargrove (a young James Caviezel), who’s effortlessly beat.

— Sam Lester, who’s secretly offered a laxative just before the fight and ultimately runs in the ring.

— Hambone Busby, who, like his brother, has been bribed to take a dive. Gillon, nevertheless, threatens to kill Hambone’s brother, Slim, unless he’s victorious within the ring. Hambone fights a vicious fight, but in the end loses. Slim is certainly located murdered.

Palmer is enraged. His subsequent fight is with Sonny Hawkins, who’s effortlessly dispatched.

Robby Gillon, the son of John Gillon, approaches the ring subsequent, but then backs out below directions from his father. His cowardice is regarded as a forfeit.

Frank Mangrum officially loses to disqualification following kicking Palmer inside the groin, then hitting the referee.

Tank Miller, a gargantuan fighter, is subsequent. He puts up a superb fight, but a tiring Palmer sooner or later beats him.

That brings up Diggstown’s ideal man, Hammerhead Hagan, the only fighter ever to essentially beat Palmer through their expert careers. He’s brought in as a surprise ringer. Gillon moved him in as a county resident just prior to the bet guidelines had been established, which means that Hagan can legally fight.

The bout is one-sided. Palmer appears performed for, but he gets new motivation following seeing Diggs, who’s sitting courtside, move his hand slightly (which he interprets as a show of assistance). Caine, not wanting to determine his buddy die, attempts to throw inside the towel, but Palmer catches it and throws it back. Palmer rallies to knock out his opponent.

Palmer, Caine and Fitz start their celebration of this miraculous feat. They’re reduce quick by Gillon, who notes that his son under no circumstances entered the ring — as a result, only nine fights have transpired.

The correct tenth fighter is then introduced: Minoso Torres, a tough-as-nails boxer who ruled the boxing underground within the prison from which Caine was lately released. Nobody has ever defeated him. Gillon admonishes Caine with: “Never attempt to hustle a hustler.”

An exhausted Palmer is no match for Torres. But just when all appears lost, Caine whistles at Torres, gets his focus, straightens his tie and does a thumbs-down gesture (copying a move Gillon did earlier). Torres drops his gloves and invites Palmer to hit him, hitting the canvas, knocked out.

Caine was expecting such a trick from Gillon and bribed Torres extended ago for any moment like this.

Gillon has lost every little thing. Calm initially, he snaps and pulls a gun. His son, Robby, tries to intervene and Gillon smacks him. Palmer then grabs Gillon and prepares to deck him. Rather, he turns to Hambone, claiming, “My hands hurt.” Hambone gladly obliges and delivers Gillon a effective knockout blow.

Caine congratulates Palmer: “What you did,” he says, “couldn’t be accomplished.” To which Palmer replies, “Now, you motivate me”.
