Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands today announced her abdication.

Two hours ago Queen Beatrix spoke in a nationally televised speech and announced that she will transfer her powers to her son Prince Willem-Alexander.

The Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C. has issued this message on Facebook: "Thank you, Queen Beatrix, for 33 years of service", a sentiment that resonates well with many in our readership.

Celebrations

Obviously, it is still early but various Dutch clubs around the country are making plans for special celebrations on or around Thursday April 30th.

King's Day

Queen's Day is becoming King's Day in 2014, and will be celebrated on April 27th, the birthday of future King Willem-Alexander.
